U.S. law enforcement can force Microsoft Corp. to turn over emails it stores in Ireland, a judge ruled in a case that technology companies have rallied around as they pursue billions of dollars in data storage business abroad. [ ]
The Redmond, Washington-based software company has said rulings forcing it to turn over emails threaten to rewrite the Constitutions protections against illegal search and seizure and could damage U.S. foreign relations. Its arguments were joined by large technology companies, including Apple Inc., Cisco Systems Inc., Verizon Communications Inc. and AT&T Inc.

The arrogance is breathtaking. It’s like these people think they’re gods.
It’ll come back to bite them. The backlash already started in Germany, and it’ll cascade to the other EU states.
U.S. District Judge Loretta A. Preska ruled from the bench ... it was a question of who controlled the data rather than where it was stored.
So if the clear wording of the Constitution gets in the way, just make something up (doesn't matter what) to justify getting around it! This judge is insane ...
Utterly corrupt kritocracy.
Good for Microsoft to fight this battle!
Microsoft deserves praise for standing up against the US Federal Gov’t!
Why isn’t Apple and Google joining in to protect privacy?
Apple is, at least. Google cooperates with tyrants, whether domestic or foreign (China of course, and the EU with its “right to be forgotten” thingy).
Read the article, Apple is right there. Also, keep in mind that the NSA has repeatedly complained about how hard Apple iDevices are to crack and recover data from. No such complaints from them about Microsoft and Google’s mobile platforms... Apple also has refused to install a backdoor for the NSA. That’s some resistance right there.
“hristopher Soghoian...said in a statement afterward that the ruling was “a major blow not just for Microsoft, but for the entire U.S. cloud computing industry.”
Anything that takes away from “the cloud” is a WINNER in my book. I like the cloud almost as much as I like Windows 8...which is not very much, to say the least.
The so-called “cloud” is collectivization and data-mining. And enough self-described conservative talk show hosts do commercials for cloud backup systems too (e.g. Lifelock).
They can issue a warrant, let’s see if anyone in Ireland cares

The advertising doesn’t bother me too much as pretty much all the ads now on conservative national radio shows are bottom-feeders - and the shows need someone to pay their way. What bothers me a LOT MORE is how effective the left has been to keep mainstream advertisers off of those shows. That is SCARY stuff to me.
Borders?
We don’t need no stinkin’ borders...
Skynet, meet The Cloud.
How is this done for physical evidence? If I keep papers or some OJ style bloody gloves in Ireland what are the procedures for getting a warrant to get them? Would Irish officials obey them or just ignore them?
Yeah, but then step two is to start seizing Irish assets until they comply...stuff like that is already happening.
The Constitutional penumbra keeps growing.
Yet another reason foreigners will have for not using American companies. Good job FedGov!
