A German Army General has been appointed to Chief of Staff of U.S. Army Europe. This is the first time a non-U.S. officer has held this position.
Amazing isn’t it? Enemies become friends, friends become enemies.
In the Obama-Age, you would be right. Allegiance to the United States won’t be a factor.
I didn’t know there was still a U.S. Army Europe. I thought we had brought just about all the troops back to the states.
Ze drem vil finali kum tru.
Here is the oath every US army officer has to take. Somebody let me know when the German takes the oath to protect and defend the constitution of the United States.
“I, _____ (SSAN), having been appointed an officer in the Army of the United States, as indicated above in the grade of _____ do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office upon which I am about to enter; So help me God.” (DA Form 71, 1 August 1959, for officers.)
my thought exactly
:-)
This German officer, Brigadier General Laubenthal, will NOT be the US Army Chief of Staff. That is currently General Odierno; The BG Laubenthal will be the “Chief of Staff” of US Army Europe working for and subordinate to the USAREUR Commander LTG Donald Campbell. As chief of staff he oversees the primary staff officers: G-1, G-2, G-3, G-4 & etc and coordinate their actions.
Think of the movie “The Devil’s Brigade” where the Brigade Commander was an American Colonel and the XO was a Canadian Lieutenant Colonel.
Or during WWII when General Dwight Eisenhower was the Supreme Allied Commander and his Deputy Commander was British Air Chief Marshal Arthur Tedder.
And seeing that the US Army has only 2 combat brigades in Europe, this makes some sense to me.
He will be referred to as “Herr Obergruppenfurher”. On weekends he answers to “mein schatzie”.

They’re probably talking about the NATO post that is connected to EUSA. Yep, just checked. It’s a NATO slot, so no big deal. And by chief of staff, the talking about his serving as a staff officer for a 3 star who outranks him.
It would be like Eisenhower having Brits on his staff during WWII.
Yeah its significant in a bad way. Soldiers should not be subjected to following the orders of someone who is not an American, answerable to American courts, values, and public opinion.
Its sickening. He should never ever under any circumstances get to make a decision that affects an American, unless that PFC can opt out of answering to him. Its BS.
Is this Obama’s way of saying no American is qualified? What a jerk...

“The Germans do have a lot of experience at dealing with Russian hordes.”
How is getting your ass solidly kicked, a qualification to lead Americans?
We've been doing it for over two hundred years. I suppose that you have never heard of Baron von Steuben or the Marquis de Layfayette, both foreign officers who served in the Continental Army during the American Revolution.
“The Chief of Staff does not command combat forces”
If he commands an E-4 who answers the phone, that’s too much. Unless the kid agrees to it. We aren’t Hessians to be whored out. (well, actually we are,,, but you know what I mean)
You know where that might be in black and white?
“Certainly no Bundeswehr general will have allegiance to the US.”
Agreed. Why should they. The US has become an unreliable ally.
