A nuclear lab in Tennessee has canceled a "Southern accent reduction" class after employees raised heck about what they saw as a slap in their Southern faces, the class instructor said Tuesday.

Can you imagine..."Lose your Boston accent"? "Black"? "New York"? "Spanish"?
By the way, WHY is this kind of thing part of a federal government nuclear lab, anyway?????
Talk about frivolous spending.
Being from Upstate NY, they weren't too happy about the question.
And there was a Bubba in our office. ROFLMAO
The Secretary asked me if I wanted to go with her to see her brother who was in jail in Roanoke. Yeh...right
This was a high class engineering office.
I said that the blacks down there were wonderful to me. The secretary said "They know their place". Unbelievable.
So what accent were they going to replace it with?
Maybe they wanted all Southerners to talk like our glorious _resident. /sarc
um, ers, uhs and duhs sound alike all over the globe.
No...but I have found learning to talk like Johnny Carson got me over the first major obstacle in dealing with Yankees—the language barrier.
The Southern accent is music to my ears. It is the most beautiful of the English language accents, followed by Scottish and Jamaican.

No, we grow up with it and never stop using it. It's so much more pleasing to the ear than a New Yawk honk.
A few years back, I was doing some shopping, and the cashier was a Yankee. Misguided as many of them are, she told me that my "accent" wasn't really that pronounced compared to some she'd heard---see, she thought she was giving me a compliment.
I assumed an expression of concern and responded, "Thank you for telling me. I'll definitely have to work on that."
Poor thing...she looked completely confused.
Agreed. Can’t stand to hear the New York accent. Gag.
Did you know that the Southern dialect is very closely related to the British? That explains why so many English actors are excellent at portraying our accent, while others mangle it.
Never thought about it, really. I’m gonna study on that today, y’all.
Well, you know us, just a bunch o racist hicks.
(snicker)
I don`t have an accent. Y`all do.
The leftists call Southerners “Teabillies”.
Lived in the North and Mid-west. Now the south. I will take the south any day of the week. Especially the smaller towns.
This has got to be the stupidest suggestion ... wait ... an American university ?
figgers.
In fact, I've read recently that the Southern accent spoken today is closer to the UK English spoken in England in the 1700's than the English spoken in the UK today.
I tell you what sister, there are a whole lot more dumb Northerners than dumb Southerners. And there is a huge difference between spoken language and written language. No one says “hi” anymore, it’s “hey.” Ever heard of a colloquialism? When I was in the Army, I can clearly recall saying about my staff and I that “We were happy to have the opportunity to contribute to y’all’s mission,” lol —it just came out. Call me a rube, I really don’t give one lil hoot what any Northerner thinks. (Full disclosure—I lived in St. Paul until age 8)
My friend who is an elementary school teacher from Alabama and I went up to Green Bay for a Hank Junior concert-—the place was so beat down and haggard, all the cars were old and tired, there were no boats in the slips—we couldn’t wait to get back to the South where at least there is some hint of life. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
