Germans counterattack US advance
Sunday, July 30, 1944 www.onwar.com

On the Western Front... Advancing elements of US 1st Army seize Granville and enter Avranches, capturing bridges over the See River. The left flank is counterattacked by German forces of the 2nd Parachute Corps at Percy and Villedieu. British forces mount successful attacks near Caumount.

In the Mariana Islands... On Tinian, the main town of Tinian is captured by American forces. The southern half of Guam has been secured by US troops.

In the Philippine Sea... The US heavy cruiser Indianapolis is sunk by a Japanese submarine.

In New Guinea... The US 6th Division (Sibert) lands unopposed on the islands of Amsterdam and Middleburg, off Cape Sansapor. Task Force 78 (Admiral Berkey) provides naval support.

7th Army Sector. At this point, you'd have to think that any position west of the Seine River is no longer tenable for the Germans.

German estimate of Allied Order of Battle in Normandy. Note the copious use of whiteout to make German units disappear. If only it were that easy:

Thanks to Paul James of the Facebook group World War II 70th Anniversary, I can post this alternate version of the photo on page 11 of today's news.

 photo 0730-coutances33_zpsf10618f6.jpg
The alternate caption: "US 3rd Marine Division leathernecks disembark on the beach from an LVT-1 of the 3rd Amphibious Tractor Battalion during training for the invasion of Guam on Cape Esperance, Guadalcanal during the week of May 12, 1944."

Hmm. A little different than the Times caption. Which one is accurate?
