The San Andreas Fault is apparently just on the other side of I-10. And the San Jacinto Fault is on the other side of the San Jacinto mountains. Not to mention the volcanic activity, evidenced by the Salton Buttes (lava domes) particularly. And of course the “new” faults shown on this graphic.

Rancho Mirage is between Palm Desert and Cathedral City on that map....I'd say it's no more than ten miles - maybe less - from the San Andreas.

The only buildings in this entire valley that are taller than four or five stories are the Injun casino hotels....and this could well be that they don't have to adhere to certain codes, being "sovereign nations".
