Battle for Poor Shoppers Fuels Dollar-Store Deal
Wall Street Journal ^ | July 28, 2014 | By Paul Ziobro and Shelly Banjo

The battle for America's poorest consumers intensified Monday with Dollar Tree Inc. agreement to buy rival Family Dollar Stores Inc. for about $8.5 billion.

The chains thrived during the recession as the number of working Americans living in poverty increased by nearly 40%, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The stores appealed to cash-strapped shoppers with bargain-basement prices and locations that were closer to their homes than many Wal-Mart supercenters. The smaller package sizes of everyday items like laundry detergent and cereal fit into the budgets of consumers living paycheck to paycheck.

I bought some cheese slices at a Dollar Store - got them home and realized they didn’t actually contain any dairy at all.

I am looking for toothpaste with anti--freeze, but they seem to be out.

The poor (relatively) city here has a Family dollar and a Dollar Tree, along with other “dollar stores, and they are quite good for many things.

Dollar Tree is cheaper than Family dollar a for what it has, while another dollar store has the most variety with lower prices than Family dollar.

Want 2’’ x 55 yds of packing tape? One ebay it will be about 2.50 minimum, but at the dollar store it is 1.00.

But if you want Clear Rimless Reading Glasses (in a Bag) then Ebay is the place to go .99 total. Or 48 bike tubes patches with glue for 1.84 total.

Yet all the local dollar stores i know of are run by Muslims. i gave gospel tracts outside a weekly prayer meeting at the local mosque a couple weeks ago. It must have had 200 people. Not good.

I’ve never been in a pawn shop.....where are they usually located?

In large cities with drug problems it seems. Ask an addict.

“It’s a very “lean” business model apparently, and one that is working.”

In my area I think they’re losing to Wal-Mart; they seem to grab a niche with either people who don’t drive or those that are looking for one particular item (like batteries). In general their prices aren’t as good as Wal-Mart’s.

Greeting cards have become stupidly expensive.

I bought mine at the dollar store for a while. But I get a catalog that sells them even cheaper. If you don’t have a bunch of people that know each other and can buy a package..it’s a great savings for birthday, sympathy, thinking of you, etc. cards.
