I grew up in socal and was there until the late 70’s and we had thunderstorms every year. Climate change?
There are occasional thunderstorms, it’s not frequent but they’re somewhat regular.
Rare though.
Currently we’re right in the middle of a months-long segment of blue skies, so the people likely weren’t focused on lightning as a threat.
Hope they’re ok.
Ditto on that. In late July or August one or two storms develop west of the mountains in the San Diego area. I have seen lightning strikes on the beach and cliffs and even a waterspout near Carlsbad beach. It does not happen every year but it is not uncommon.
