The Los Angeles Fire Department was investigating reports that as many as seven people had been struck by lightning at Venice Beach and were injured when a rare series of thunderstorms hit the Southern California area on Sunday afternoon.
Oh no.
I can’t emphasize enough that we NEVER get thunderstorms in SoCal and I’ve never seen lightening here. We don’t even get rain.
Hope they are OK.
I grew up in socal and was there until the late 70’s and we had thunderstorms every year. Climate change?
Joe Bastardi mentioned something about a hurricane hitting SoCal possibly this year, but if it doesn’t happen this is just as good.
It was crazy here on the Westside a few hours ago, could hear the thunder but received no rain..some areas got heavy rain..just one of those crazy weather days..hope everyone is OK
The rain is needed.
There are occasional thunderstorms, it’s not frequent but they’re somewhat regular.
Rare though.
Currently we’re right in the middle of a months-long segment of blue skies, so the people likely weren’t focused on lightning as a threat.
Hope they’re ok.
I couldn’t live in southern California for that reason alone. It rains here just about every day during the summer and I like it that way.
You would think if a person was struck by lighting they would know it.
I have seen a few real storms here in California. Even by Midwest standards. One of them had enough power blow over a boxcar. One had hail that put hole in my corrugated fiberglass patio roof. You see them more often in the area where hot. Dessert air mets cooler coastal air.
Was up on the top of a mountain at Ft Irwin during one. Not fun at all feeling like a lightning rod!
They were rare near the coast, maybe recall only a half dozen over the decades I lived there.
California has a dry season, no rain, from mid-April to mid-October. Then it has a wet season, from mid-October to mid-April. It's been that way for eons.
There have been wetter and drier years.
I remember once as a kid. I was home with strep throat. It rained ENDLESSLY. I knew that the Bible spoke about 40 days and 40 nights of rain. WE HAD MORE. I got nervous because of the Bible. But, as I grew up I realized that weather pattern was normal for the West Coast.
Since our planet has been around for 4.6 BILLION YEARS we can't really get mmore that the feel for it in just these few hundred years of weather pattern...for SURE.
We need FEWER people; THAT'S what we need. We have 38 million Californians...and those don't include the scads of illegals. TOO MANY.
I grew up here when there were only 10 million folks here. We didn't need so much water then.
Is this related to the recent Russian video of swimmers and beachgoers getting pelted with golf sized hail and swimming and running for cover?
Ouch!!
Could be a SyFy movie plot..
Global zapping and kaaa-smacking happens.
Ditto on that. In late July or August one or two storms develop west of the mountains in the San Diego area. I have seen lightning strikes on the beach and cliffs and even a waterspout near Carlsbad beach. It does not happen every year but it is not uncommon.
Weird weather here today in Orange County & super hot/humid..my hubby just said earthquake weather. Hope not!
Latest report is 14 people were struck by the lightening with 2 critical. Also one person who was playing golf on Catalina Island was struck by lightening and taken to a hospital.
Never mind, it's LAFD.
But the weather today in LA is weird. A little cooler than one would expect.
“.......Ive never seen lightening here. We dont even get rain.”
HUNH!?
This ol’, and I mean ol’ So. Cal guy been through MANY lightning storms in So. Cal. What you mean “NEVER”?
It’s called a Mediterranean climate. Dry summers, hopefully wet winters
However, there can be a monsoon effect coming up out of Mexico this time of year, that can produce ‘tropical’ weather events.
Too bad no one studies geography any more.
