Militants resumed firings rockets into Israel from Gaza on Saturday, rejecting an extension to a ceasefire in a conflict in which more than 1,000 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have died.
Israel had agreed to extend an initial 12-hour pause in the fighting by a further four hours but this was rejected by Islamist group Hamas, which dominates Gaza.
Warning sirens sounded across the country as rockets were fired as far as the Tel Aviv area, police said. Israeli tank fire killed a man in the southern Gaza Strip, a local official said, announcing the first fatality after the breakdown of the ceasefire.
Even before the truce broke down, some Israeli ministers signaled that a comprehensive deal to end the 19-day conflict with Hamas and its allies was remote.
Gazans had earlier taken advantage of the lull in fighting to recover their dead and stock up on food supplies, flooding into the streets after the ceasefire began at 8.00 a.m. (0100 EST) to discover scenes of massive destruction in some areas.

If Israel has a nuke, they ought to use it. But then Russia would probably nuke them. We, i.e. the U.S. under Obama, sure isn’t going to do anything to stop this. Either way, this will not end well for Israel.
We sent them 47 million more U.S. tax dollars to buy more rockets to kill our supposed friend in the region.
And Obama shows up to Hollywood for fundraisers.
Spielberg is funding the next Hitler.
Those pix at the linked site give me hope that Israel is pursuing this fight properly. If Gaza needs to be turned into dust to stop the rocket firings, so be it. Get it done.
Then he can make a movie about it.
Hamas sure is not improving its target acquisition and accuracy much, regardless of HOW much practice they try to put in.
They are sort of drizzling away all that investment Iran is putting into the efforts to dislodge the Israelis. Iran is just going to have to find a different and more reliable client as the delivery agent of their foreign policy.
Mideast politics is such a treacherous undertaking. They can just turn on each other in a heartbeat.
And no matter how much the Current Occupant and his pet French poodle, Jean-Francois Kerre`, try to appease the “Palestinians”, they are still part of the enemy, so far as Hamas is concerned.
If the Jews weren’t so adverse to the effects of chemical/biological warfare, that would be a great way of depopulating Gaza. Pump the tunnels full of sarin/vx to kill terrorist scum, and shell in CS/non lethal irritant into the population areas....keep it up north to south until the population is in Egypt or the sea.
