Border Sheriffs Perplexed by Rick Perry's Plan to Send 1,000 Troops to Stare at Mexico

Why would you spend millions of dollars sending troops to the border who can't actually detain anyone? That's what some Texas sheriffs of border towns are asking in the wake of Gov. Rick Perry's plan to send 1,000 National Guards members to the Texas/Mexico border in the next month, according to the Dallas Morning News. For them, it would be more useful to spend the money on hiring more deputies and police, aka people who are allowed to detain migrants.

“I don’t know what good they can do,” Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio told the Dallas Morning News. “You just can’t come out here and be a police officer.” Lucio and other sheriffs said they weren't consulted before Perry's announcement and, in Lucio's opinion, the police and Border Patrol agents were handling the small uptick in crime. "At this time, a lot of people do things for political reasons. I don’t know that it helps,” Lucio said.

The sheriffs don’t like the national guard on “their turf”

1,000 nat’l guard troops? that it??

1900 miles of border between Texas and mexico. that’s 1 guy for every 2 miles. not effective.

20,000 troops would be better. 10 guys for every mile

Your numbers assume all 1000 would be present at the same time. I think they might work in shifts meaning about 1/3 of them (333) would be present at any one time, which puts them about 1 every 5.7 miles. This was pure political theater.

“At this time, a lot of people do things for political reasons. I don’t know that it helps,”

I wonder if that includes the publisher of this propaganda piece.

Did the author ask the sheriffs what the hell good they’re doing?

People had the same complaint when Bush sent them to the border but the traffic stopped immediately when they did.

They set up and they watch the border and when they see an illegal they call the BP.

No, darlin’. That’d be 1241 miles.

The NG has the power to detain.

IIRC, every time we'd go near the Korean demilitarized zone (DMZ) we had to wear MP brassards, as seen above, no matter what our actual job title was. Why couldn't they do the same in this situation?

Well if you are going to announce you are sending the National Guard to the border and at the same time announce they can't detain anyone and will just be observers what do you expect. We need leaders! Get with the border Sheriffs and border town police and come up with a plan to secure the border. Leave the press conferences to Obama! Take action and lead! Slow down every border crossing by swarming the road ways with police and strictly enforce traffic laws. Do vehicle inspections on trucks after they have crossed the border, etc. When you hear Mexico start complaining you know it is working so double down. No need to hold press conferences, let your actions speak for themselves. When Mexico starts complaint tell them to secure their border or we will

They set up and they watch the border and when they see an illegal they call the BP.

And then the BP does what it does now, process them, feed them and put them on a bus with a destination somewhere in small town America.

One thousand is all that he can afford. Add up the costs of a thousand Army guys, their housing pay, etc.

To be truthful....for the 1,900 miles of Texas border...you’d have to have around 50,000 troops to maintain adequate security. Toss in New Mexico, California, and Arizona. You’d probably have to have around 150,000 troops. That would mean pulling every soldier in South Korea, Italy, Germany, and Alaska....to make this work.

A bunch of soldiers with no ammo in their weapons and no authority to shoot even if they did, is no help at all.

The NG has the power to detain.

So does the Border Patrol or ICE but then they feed and clothe them, render medical service then put them on a bus or plane and send them into our cities to be serviced by the taxpayer until the next election, where they will repay us for our kindness.
