The film begins in formulaic fashion, introducing us slowly to the ensemble cast that is about to flee for their lives for the rest of the movie, while also giving us the backstory on how a government group called The New Founding Fathers have instituted the Purge, while Internet preachers rail against it as a form of false, secular religion.
Then the sirens go off, the population huddles behind closed doors and commencement of the purge begins with ticking clock, an excellent suspense element.

I saw the previews for this and thought "Could this be too far in the future?" As the inner cities of some major metro areas continue to devolve, it seems possible that the mind set of some folks is that they can do what they want with little fear of consequence now. But, it is just a movie. Right? For now.

And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?... The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If...if...We didn't love freedom enough. And even more we had no awareness of the real situation.... We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward. ― Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

I just like it broken up into dramatic pieces

I think that the author is really grasping, here, and gives the average viewer of this movie way too much credit.
Nice thoughts, though.

Yup. Too many folks who think that BFF (Big F’n Fed) is the benevolent savior for all their woes, will sit idly by. They’re no threat to BFF. Makers and takers. Sadly, history isn’t much taught anymore. Some have a small clue others, have no clue. Or care about the “past” ‘cause it’s the “past”.

LOL! Yeah. If you read down the page at some of the comments, a lot of folks agree that Mr. Zahn is stretching a bit on some of his observations. But, isn’t that what movie reviewers do? It seems that entertainment value isn’t as important, at least to them, as the “message” they perceive. I used to hate it in English when the instructor would ask “What did the author mean by that?”. Was it fun/informative to read? I guess there were a lot of writers with message stories. If you got a message and can’t state it I guess you fictionalize it so you can’t be directly accused of something?

Actually, I see it more like “The Hunger Games” with the wildlife corridors as envisioned be the ecowackos that peons aren’t allowed to enter and particular zones laid out for specific tasks. Feel bad for the “youts” of today and for their future if they aren’t awakened. I’ll probably be “gone” before the total breakdown. Then again, maybe not. ;>}

The plot line reminds me of the ridiculous plot from V for Vendetta. A Right-wing Christian government has a stranglehold on society? What a friggin' joke! The Left wing, Muslim/atheist/homosexual movement has the stranglehold, and we on the Right are too scared of what the media will say about us to do anything but stay meek and quiet!

"Feel bad for the youts of today and for their future if they arent awakened."And the way to awaken them is -- drum roll, please -- to create our own conservative/patriotic pop culture.

“The Purge” was one of the most stupid and boring movies I have watched in years.

The whole premise behind these films is idiotic.

You got it. Somehow in these movies, the Right Wing Chrisitans, together with big corporations, are always powerful enough to stage a coup and impose a theocracy on America. Its laughabe that Hollywood’s next new idea for a futuristic, “the world has gone to Hell” apocalypse movie always involves the stale idea of Right Wing Christians taking over.

Dumb premise for a movie. After a few defensive shootings it would become very quiet.
Total garbage. Written by a rich left winger who has no experience with self defense, guns or bows and arrows.

The author is injecting a lot of themselves into this movie that isn't there. It's a cheap dramatic horror that flirts with big ideas before quickly moving on to more blood and violence as if that can fill the philosophical void. This ignores the elephant in the room of basic premise of the movie being plain stupid.
Now if someone were to think that this BS is going to come true...all I can say as if the liberals thing they can erect new founding fathers and a system based on one night a year of "2 minutes of hate" (way to rip off your intellectual superiors hollywood) being legal (except for politicians) they have another thing coming.
