If the rate stays on track, 2014 could break 2010's record high of 1,179 cases
San Diego County has seen more than double the number of pertussis cases this year compared to last, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA).
Nine new instances of whooping cough, which may have left others exposed, brings the countys total to 895.
Just 120 cases were reported by this time last year, and for the whole of 2013, 431 cases were confirmed.
The county and state are experiencing an epidemic of pertussis, said Wilma J. Wooten, M.D., a county public health officer.
She said infants are at the greatest risk for severe illness or death from the disease.
According to the HHSA, the new cases were reported at the following locations, and all but two patients were up-to-date on their immunizations:
A 7-year-old at Mason Elementary School
An 8-year-old at Dailard Elementary School
A 9-year-old who was not up-to-date with immunizations at Indian Hills Camp in Jamul A 10-year-old at Normal Heights Elementary School
An 11-year-old who was not up-to-date with immunizations at Lincoln Acres School
A 14-year-old at Hillsdale Middle School
A 15-year-old at San Ysidro High School
A 16-year-old at Altus Charter School of San Diego and El Cajon Learning Center A person at Boys and Girls Clubs of Oceanside
Pertussis begins with a cough and runny nose that progresses after one or two weeks to rapid coughing fits with the characteristic whooping sound.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that all children get the DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis) vaccine at 2 months old, 4 months old, 6 months old, 15 to 18 months old and 4 to 6 years old.
Students entering seventh grade are required to show proof they got the Tdap booster shot, and experts say all pregnant women should get the booster in their third trimester.
Some years ago, in the late 1990s, I was living in Glendale, California, surrounded by immigrants, legal and otherwise *bit hyst Nexucans but also Armenians in that area). There was an epidemic of a whooping-cough-like illness which was going around. I had it, and was sick for about 2 months solid. I went to the ER a couple of times, the coughing was so bad that I had post-tussive emesis). I suspect I had gotten it from all the unvaccinated children around there. Now, as a kid I had received the Dtap vaccine, but its immunity appraently doesn’t last forever. The illness may have been viral rather than bacterial; One round of antibiotics didn’t do all that much for me. Now, it may have just been a severe ase of bronchitis. But I sure was sick for a couple of months. Would not be eager to repeat that experience.
Good parents.

From Wikipedia (some of their stuff can be trusted):The incubation period is typically seven to ten days with a range of four to 21 days and rarely may be as long as 42 days,[6] after which there are usually mild respiratory symptoms, mild coughing, sneezing, or runny nose. This is known as the catarrhal stage. After one to two weeks, the coughing classically develops into uncontrollable fits, each with five to ten forceful coughs, followed by a high-pitched "whoop" sound in younger children, or a gasping sound in older children, as the patient struggles to breathe in afterwards (paroxysmal stage).
I guess there are cases where a longer incubation and initially mild symptoms can cause some serious spreading problems - they also said it was nicknamed the 100 day cough and that typical coughing lasted 6-7 weeks. What a present from our overlords...
A lot of Marin county types are not getting immunized either.
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
Is there any doubt? When you tell doctors NOT to report a Medical PANDEMIC you know there is dirty work going on. Ditto for the Border Agents.
Our news is not telling us the truth, we all know it. Ebola, TB, MERS, MERSA, Leprosy and some very weirdo ones never seen in the US before, many mosquito transmitted. I’v surprised no Malaria, Typhoid or Typhus has been reported or just maybe the docs have been told to SHUT UP! MSM won’t dig into it they are to busy kissing 0’s butt.
I’m old enough to remember History class on Typhoid Mary a carrier, but sure made a lot of people sick and dead!

If you came out of the Boomer generation like me, you got vaccinated by being exposed to it as young as possible for most childhood contagious disease.
The only vaccine I ever received was Small Pox, because the school did it free.
No vaccines were Mandatory back then for school.
Then what do you do for those of us who can’t be exposed to those virus dead or alive ones via vaccine? My PCP says I can’t even have the Shingles Vac, due to a compromised immune system. Already had 2 small patches of the painful crap.
You seem up to date on this rdcbn - can you tell me if the immunizations have quit working? Is that what's being said here?
The anti-vaccine activists would disagree with you on that. They work hard and tirelessly to discourage every parent from having their children vaccinated. They are, in fact, a major contributing factor in the comeback of whooping cough.
The article said that of the new cases, all but 2 were up to date on their shots. There were 9 new cases, so 7 were fully vaccinated. This does not change the estimation of 90% effective, because we don't know how many vaccinated people were exposed and did not come down with whooping cough.
No vaccine is 100% effective. The idea of massive vaccination is to make sure enough people are vaccinated--even accounting for the vaccine failures--to prevent transmission of the disease if it does break out. That is what is meant by "herd immunity"--that the transmission chain is broken.
Check the CDC website for the most current vaccine recommendations.
If you know someone who is pregnant or has a new baby, it is very important to get the pertussis vaccine if you plan to visit the baby. Keep in mind that vaccines take a couple weeks to "kick in." Also, pregnant women should get the vaccine in the 2nd or early 3rd trimester. That way, the baby gets passive immunity from antibodies created by the mother until it is old enough to receive the vaccine.
Immunizations do not necessarily provide enough resistance to prevent you from getting a disease, it provides the population enough resistance to avoid wide spread epidemics.
However, in the case of whooping cough, the disease has been essentially eradicated in the US and the strains from South America seem to have mutated into more virulent forms to the point where the vaccinations are not as effective.
Since whooping cough has been largely eradicated here at home, people forget how bad it is and have elected not to vaccinate themselves and their families so we are losing our collective resistance to the disease which allows it to get a foot hold and reach cortical mass in the population at large.
Same with other nasty afflictions such as mumps, measles, diphtheria , polio and others that were finally eradicated after decades of hard fought effort on the part of CDC.
Lots of other horrible Third World diseases such as TB are also becoming both drug resistant and more sever and aggressive .
The resurgence of bed bugs and other largely eradicated parasites coming up from Central America compound the problem because many are disease vectors for the above disease and their eradication was a major reason why we were able to eradicate the diseases several decades ago.
The illegals are also bringing up pests that can destroy agricultural crops as well.
Their lack of basic concepts of sanitary conditions also help spread disease
Americans have forgotten the devastating epidemics, plagues and infestations which made life miserable for our grand parents and no longer understand that we are trying to stop more than illegal aliens at our borders.
However, in the case of whooping cough, the disease has been essentially eradicated in the US and the strains from South America seem to have mutated into more virulent forms to the point where the vaccinations are not as effective.
Interesting information - an important warning. Thanks for sharing rdcbn...
The shots don’t work. Had an outbreak here, and all the cases were up to date on their shots. Of course, the county health board blamed those who didn’t have shots for the outbreak, even though there were no cases of a non vaccinated kid being sick.
Also, considering that an adult who had a shot is considered up to date because the TDAP is a recommended vaccine and not a required one. Even though they may not have had the shot in 30 years.
“Someone” tampering with the vaccines? Is “someone” introducing live instead of weakened virus into the shots?
All cases were vaccinated, but among those who were not “immunized,” there were no cases.
Phew! Something getting very smelly in here...
Stinks to High Heaven, IMO.
Thanks for the ping!
