LAWRENCE, Kan. Kansas Sen. Pat Roberts won't debate tea party challenger Milton Wolf ahead of the state's Aug. 5 Republican primary.
The Lawrence Journal-World reports that Roberts executive campaign manager Leroy Towns said Friday that Wolf has failed to outline positions beyond what Towns called vague rhetoric and false attacks on the senator.
Wolf campaign spokesman Ben Hartman said it's unbecoming for Roberts to duck debates and noted that Roberts previously had promised publicly to have them.
The 78-year-old Roberts is seeking his fourth, six-year term in the Senate. Wolf is a 43-year-old radiologist making his first run for public office.
Two lesser-known candidates also are on the GOP ballot. Shawnee County District Attorney Chad Taylor and Lawrence attorney Patrick Wiesner are seeking the Democratic nomination.

He doesn’t need to debate and take the chance of screwing up. Roberts is going to win regardless.
“He doesnt need to debate and take the chance of screwing up. Roberts is going to win regardless.”
Of course. It’s smart politics, but also smacks of elitism and aristocracy. Cornyn, McConnell, Cochran, Alexander, Roberts, none of them want an open debate to defend their records. And Graham only agreed to debate at the very last minute.
They all may win in the end, but their Establishment elitism is shining through.
I am always wary of “Tea Party” candidates who have no discernible history of Conservatism. Does Wolf have any voting record?
Yep. Look up 'establishment elitism' in the dictionary and you'll find all their pictures next to the definition.
The elite don’t have to mix with the common folk, right Dawg. Maybe you don’t feel it necessary to hold GOPe senators accountable but I do. Wolf would make Roberts look like the senile old Washington establishment that make up the US Senate. If your happy with Ditch McConnell and the band going along with Obama, vote the status quo. Where has the GOP been on the IRS scandal? Not one has called for the elimination of the IRS. They get what they deserve.
Apparently not. Roberts has been running ads in the KC media market saying Wolf hasn't voted in years.
TERM LIMITS ARE A MUST...AND THESE OLD TIMERS NEED TO RETIRE..at 76 Roberts needs to be sent home. the grey matter is gone and I'm 71 so I'm not picking on Seniors, but there comes a time to admit THAT.....
AGE MATTERS...PLEASE NOTE THAT HILLARY CLINTON...
I'm making a statement of fact and you're assuming I'm approving of the decision and am a Roberts supporter. Is jumping to conclusions the only exercise you get?
I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you but if she gets elected then Clinton will only be a few months older than Reagan was when he was sworn in for his first term.
As for Roberts, I'm tired of Senators and Congressmen who view it as a job for life. Strom Thurmond was 100 when he was in office. Byrd was 92. That Republican in Texas who lost his primary was 91. For God's sake even the Catholic Church has decided that Cardinal's over 80 can't vote for Pope. We're letting dotards run our country.
Roberts is pushing that on his facebook page, too, but he's getting more backlash trolling than support.
I've seen one ad by Roberts where the schlub says he's voting for Roberts because he was a fellow former Marine. I've seen ads for Roberts attacking Wolf for those x-rays on Facebook and his voting record. You don't see any ads on where Roberts stands. That's the limit to his campaign strategy. But it'll be enough to reelect him.
Sometimes the Tea Party jumps on the bandwagon of someone who SAYS they are Conservative and does not properly vet the person. Just sayin’.
I ran in the primary against our incumbent establishment Republican governor. He wouldn’t debate me either. Which is a gross disservice to the citizenry.
The only threat to Roberts would have been if someone ran more to the center than he did. For most of his career Roberts has been a fiscal conservative and social moderate. Current shift to the right aside, the moderates in eastern Kansas aren't going to go for someone more Conservative than Roberts is.
If there’s ever a time when you would think that anti establishment sentiment ought to be sky high, and especially so with Republican voters, that time ought to be now.
Anyway, I already think that the country is over and a Pat Roberts win would just be further proof of that, in my opinion.
“Does Wolf have any voting record?”
He’s a doctor, so no. And neither did Pat Roberts when he was elected a congressman after his boss (Sebelius, sound familiar?) decided to retire.
That’s HIS seat. It is outrageous that anyone would even consider challenging him for it. It’s outrageous that the voters would even consider voting for anyone else.
“Thats HIS seat. It is outrageous that anyone would even consider challenging him for it. Its outrageous that the voters would even consider voting for anyone else.”
I certainly hope you’re being sarcastic.
