Sweden Democrat MP Anna Hagwall has been censured by the party after saying that women should "stop whining" about domestic violence and that they shoulder the responsibility to end the abuse.
"These types of statement signal a high level of naivete and it's obvious this person shouldn't handle these kind of questions," Sweden Democrat party spokesperson Paula Bieler told The Local.
Hagwall uttered the comments when asked by Sveriges Radio her view on equality and men's violence against women. The Swedish MP, one of four female Sweden Democrats sitting in parliament, later declined to retract her position in an interview with the Dagens Nyheter (DN) daily.
"You should deal with it at an early stage and think twice about who you marry and move in with," she said. "Often these men show tendencies of treating women around them badly, their mothers and sisters."
Hagwall claimed that women need to be more aware and take better care of themselves. They also need to exercise cunning as they are generally at a physically disadvantage.
The 61-year-old, who emigrated to Sweden from Hungary in 1972, pointed out that the welfare system offers a great deal of support for women in abusive relationships.
"All you have to do is go to the social services and let them know what's going on. You do actually get help in Sweden and don't have to let it end in the woman being murdered," she told DN.
She did however point out that the men also have some responsibility for the situation, explaining that it is not acceptable to break down a woman or a family and that these men deserved to be dumped.
"I feel sorry for the women as victims but it's still their darned responsibility as well," she told DN.
The Sweden Democrats told The Local that Hagwall's views did not represent those of the party as a whole.
"We believe there should be an even stronger support system in place for women who are being abused in order to encourage them to go through the legal process and achieve justice."

I totally agree. It is rare that there are no signs at all that the guy is abusive. It is best to nip the relationship in the bud at the beginning, not when it is too late. I know that is un-PC to say. But it is the truth. On the other hand, there are women who truly need help getting out of their abusive situations. Sweden has had a flood of Muslim immigrants. Islam allows for the beating of women, so no doubt the problem of domestic violence has increased significantly in recent years.
Actually, she is completely right. Abusive men give off the signals early on. Unfortunately, abused women often begin to believe that they deserve to be treated that way, and often have a history of past abuse so that they expect to be treated that way.
I think women should have enough self respect to realize that a man should not be slapping them around, but the problem is that many women who get into bad relationships are people who are vulnerable because they came from abusive families themselves, they have no self-respect for some other reason, or they’re in cultures (such as Islamic groups) where it is normal to beat your wife to death for not making your favorite food.
US law is actually changing to accommodate “cultural differences” that permit men to beat up their wives, and I’m sure Swedish law did that a long time ago. Where are the women’s groups? As silent as they are when young girls who have been raped are dragged off to Planned Parenthood centers that never report the rape.
I agree that women have to stand up for themselves, but you have to have a society that supports this and tells them - all women, including Muslims - that this is wrong and they don’t have to endure it.
Do you have an example of this?
US law is actually changing to accommodate cultural differences that permit men to beat up their wives,

You say US law, as in federal law? Can you provide the law and the year it was enacted?
And if not federal, what state law in which state are you referring to?
There was a recent case in NYC where a Muslim had killed his wife and the judge said it was a cultural thing, and I believe there was one in the Midwest, too (Michigan?).
I’d have to search for the actual accounts, but the “cultural standard” seems to be increasingly accepted by US courts.
The Muzzy knows the Judge,s address.

Well, what she said about women’s responsibility is true. Sure, someone may be in a bad spot and it might be very hard to go to the authorities or get help, but no superhero is going to come along and save them. We all ultimately have the responsibility to rescue ourselves.
She has a point.
Don’t marry the loser.
If he’s a vicious ass, leave him, quick.
If he won’t leave you alone, get some friends and some baseball bats and fix him. Or wait until he’s asleep...
Wouldn’t tell Social Services about the last option..
I think one problem is that abusers, just like sexual predators, are pretty good at sizing up and grooming victims. They are not going for the observant and cautious people that would notice the warning signs and end the relationship quickly. Instead, they are going for those who will be willing to ignore warning signs and explain them away, because they don’t want to give up on the relationship. It’s like a co-dependent relationship in some ways.
I totally agree with you on that. Most men who abuse women aren’t interested in strong women who won’t put up with the abuse. They want someone they can control. While I don’t believe that all women in abusive relationships are co-dependent, I have known quite a few women who fit that description.
Unpossible. Movies like "Enough," "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," and "GI Jane" have taught me that women can do all manner of physical activity even better than men twice their size.
Why these women should be able to whup-up on any guy that even looks at them cross.
Further the U.S. ilk of this dumb b#tch in their next breath would probably explain why women need to be in the infantry..... because they can do everything a man can do.
Well, which is it, are women the weaker sex, or are they not?
In the NYC case the perp will get 25-life, his defense team may have attempted to use the defense you speak of but the judge wasn’t buying it.
The cab driver in NYC who was convicted of arranging honor killings could get life.
In the Michigan case the perp did himself in before his trial.

I cannot find a single reference to a judge being lenient on a muslim man killing his wife or any other honor killing.
At least that’s what my search comes up with.
