Anyone that thinks the police are conservative or are friends of the people are fools. First and foremost they are union people that work for the government and they seem to like to shoot dogs a lot.

You are greatly exaggerating. Most street cops are not trigger-happy dog haters. They just trying to stay alive in a culture that judges everything they do on the basis of hindsight. They’ve been quite sympathetic when out-of-control kids have tried to get me in trouble with them.

Police, like any large group, are not monolithic. Some are conservative and some are left-wing. Most of the ones I know or have known are right of center. Those who have to deal with reality tend to be.

I live in virtually crime free suburbia. My neighbor is a cop and he's a great guy. We've never spoken about it but I think he'd agree with me that the police in my town and all around my area have taken on a sinister image.

They no longer wear a shirt and tie, they wear blue BDUs and combat boots. They no longer drive non-descript sedans, they drive huge SUVs or black sports cars which are designed to look badass. In a nutshell, they look like a military presence.

This is all image stuff, but the image they sent in the past was "I'm one of you, I look the same I just have stripes on my sleeves and a badge". Not the image is "I am scary and tough. Don't mess with me or you'll regret it." This isn't a good change.

I say my neighbor would agree because he chooses to still wear the shirt and tie, and though he is very senior and can pick his own patrol car he told me he always chooses the old fashioned white caprice classic and lets the young guys take the black Chargers with the lowered suspensions and the big steel bumper on the front. He doesn't care about looking badass and tough. That's the kind of cop I want. Seems they are getting rarer.
