The White House has picked the first female general to head the Air Force in the Pacific, which will make her the first non-pilot to command air power in such a large theater of operation.
The Pentagon announced this week that Air ForceLt. Gen. Lori J. Robinson has been nominated for promotion to four-star general and as commander of Pacific Air Forces, the Air Force component of U.S. Pacific Command. It is a major combatant command whose air, ground and naval forces have broad responsibility for security in the Asia-Pacific region. Her nomination was sent to the Senate for confirmation.
Officials said pilots historically have commanded Air Force war-fighting components for the Pacific and for U.S. Air Forces Europe; Air Forces Central, which covers the Middle East and Afghanistan; and the 1st Air Force, which is part of Northern Command and protects U.S. skies.
Gen. Robinson is not a career pilot. Her military profession is air battle manager. She has served aboard the Air Forces surveillance aircraft, the E-3 AWACs and E-8 JSTARS, and she was nominated for a promotion amid a drive for more diversity in the Pentagon.
A retired pilot said there is a reason the Air Force historically has put a pilot in charge of large combatant command Air Forces.

Just waiting for Bowe Bergdahl to be promoted General and Chairman of JCS.
That’s a lot of fruit salad (that I cannot decipher) for someone who probably has never discharged any kind of weapon in anger.
1st woman, non-pilot, chairman (or whatever), is parallel to 1st African, non-accomplished, president. So, I guess it’s business as usual?
Now that's funny. On second thought, no, it isn't. It hurts too much to be funny.
You know, I thought I thought I knew what the word "sick" meant; but you have just written a new definition for it.
By the look of her, a switch-hitter.
The pRESIDENT’s 1st Secretary of the AF was an open homo whose 1st priority wasn’t maintaining air superiority over the Russians and Chinese but making sure that the AF was welcoming to deviants.
To command a nuke carrier, you HAVE to qualify as a plain, ole ordinary nuclear engineer that has qualified on the power plant, just like every other ensign does. Admittedly, not many chiefs are going to reject a signature for a captain when he needs to sign off on a operational question, BUT HE WILL HAVE TO TURN THE VALVES every time, the right way, at the right time.
So.
Why can she NOT qualify as a pilot?
Why can she NOT fly a plane? I didn’t say “fighter pilot” or bomber pilot?
I said “pilot” - even if as a civilian-not military with 100% eyeballs and full shooting pilot?
I just don’t believe these affirmative action military leaders can be trusted to make prudent decision when the bombs are falling.
If she were the most experienced and qualified person for the position, I would have no problem with this promotion.
But obviously she is far from it.
Well, we have a non-veteran Commie for Commander In Chief, why not a non-pilot as head of the Air Force? Next they will place someone who gets seasick as head of the Navy, as long as they meet the diversity “qualifications.”
yup.
How can one be a nation’s leader without having first led something?
Female affirmative actions crap.
May she have the same resolute backbone,
that former La. Governor Blanco displayed,
during the Hurricane Katrina crisis!
I pity the brave combat pilots, that will be under
her command.
Remember folks, I was instructed to salute the
uniform, not the miserable human being
wearing it.
Exactly, some of us actually know it is a dangerous world.
I am certain she has pledged to our narcissist-in-chief she’d be willing to order firing upon civilians.
Well, lets hope when WW3 breaks out that she is not beset with a bad hair day.
She's competent and capable. So's her retired Major General husband, an Air Force Academy honor man. They lost their daughter -- a USAF 2nd Lt and also an Air Force Academy grad -- in a plane crash during flight training. She's now buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
This is a family that lives and breathes United States Air Force.
Oh, you have to have been a pilot to command USAF Pacific Air Forces? Using that logic, ten or twenty years from now we'll probably have to promote a Predator drone robot to a four-star General when there's no more human bus drivers (aka 'Pilots') to put in command. It can sit in a chair and say "*MEEPZORP! BLEEP BLOOP!*" while a stream of paper tape spools out of it's mouth delivering orders.
Trying to make this appointment into some kind of Trayvon Martin outrage is absurd and foolishness on display.
Starting with properly leading oneself.
In a specialized field (such as the Air Force) you also have to include expertise in the primary functions of that field. So either she shouldn't be in charge, or the Air Force is no longer primarily based on pilots.
Which is a whole 'nother thing...
I can't speak to much of your post and am truly sorry they lost their daughter, however this isn't about her husband nor her daughter.
The above excerpt is in the article and I consider that an outrage that is absurd and foolishness on display other than stamping out sexual assaults in the military.
Yes, you NEED to be a pilot to command.
Court Martial Letter comes across your desk, claiming a male pilot needs to be imprisoned because his string of bombs ended 200 meters across YOUR “line of demarcation” between rebels - who have been firing missiles at US planes - and the “enemy” - who have been firing missiles at US planes.
Are you going to sign it? After all, didn’t he disobey orders to drop bombs only on the right side of the line in the trees?
