SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp will slash up to 18,000 jobs, or 14 percent of its workforce, this year as it almost halves the size of its newly acquired Nokia phone business and tries to transform into a cloud-computing and mobile-friendly software company.
The larger-than-expected cuts, announced on Thursday, are the deepest in the company's 39-year history and come five months into the tenure of Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella. He outlined plans for a "leaner" business in a public memo to employees last week.

But Billy Gates says we need these illegals and amnesty because tech companies need the labor. I guess the memo din’t make it to the new CEO’s desk.
So they either bought a competitor to destroy it, or they’re going broke from 0’s Hope&Change economy.
Most of the cuts will be in Nokia, and a lot of those in Finland, it seems. Memo to employees says most people will know if they got cut within 6 months...
Also interesting is the news that they are migrating Nokias Android phones to Windows Phone. I thought there was just recently an announcement about keeping Android but making the phone use Microsoft services on the back end...
I don’t see this as a bad sign for Microsoft. Rather, this is “trimming the fat” move from the new CEO. I think everyone knew it was coming, although the cut is about twice as big as many were expecting.

At least they’re not being told they’re losing their jobs while being shot at.
I love my Nokia Windows phone. Hope they keep coming, anyway :-)

I love my Nokia 920 too. I don’t see any signs of that going away. If you’re not already running the 8.1 preview release, you’ve got something really nice to look forward to.
When we said Windows 8 was a pile of sh!t. You should have listened.
I’m surprised Microsoft is still viable. They reached their peak years ago. Each new Office and Windows version gets worse and worse, making some features harder to find.

Yeah, good luck with that. Zune, Bing, Hotmail, Windows Phone...I can’t think of many Microsoft catch-up products that have been able to achieve much of anything other than the XBox, and if I remember correctly, that division is still struggling to make profit.
What worries me, as an IT professional, is how companies like Microsoft are following this mobile-centric, cloud-centric direction: by dumbing down technology. Many people today have no idea how to use computers. They only know dependency.
I’ve lost track of how many people think that teens or twentysomethings are technological prodigies because they know how to use Facebook and Gmail. Try asking one of them to troubleshoot a wireless connection or swap out a motherboard and watch the blank stares.
I could retire from the proceeds of selling "the last nail in Microsoft's coffin" for scrap.

I knew it was a foolish deal!
I see a lot of the blank stares and total dependence on fix it types like me. A lot can’t reason some of the most basic functions. Some do well to remember their username.
There was one person, an engineer, that couldn’t go 2 or 3 times a day without calling for a reset. I would run reset, go to the person’s office, walk it through, watch it written down, put in a drawer, and totally forgotten.
That’s a lot. It’s going to have an adverse affect on our neighborhood. I feel sorry for some of the neighbor’s if they get laid off. They live in million dollar homes, how will they be able to make the mortgage payments?
Look at the bright side, there will always be plenty of work for those of us who know what they are doing :).
Computers? Well there’s that along with the flush toilet which still gives most people problems. If you don’t believe me just ask anyone who takes care of a public terlet?
