The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office isnt the only federal authority that has taken a stance against the name of the Washington Redskins.
A federal judge in Maryland issued a ruling last week that purposely did not contain the teams name, which has been described as an offensive slur against Native Americans.
U.S. District Judge Peter J. Messitte, who is presiding over a lawsuit that former New York Giants linebacker Barrett Green brought against the Redskins, issued a 21-page ruling with this footnote on the first page:
Pro Footballs team is popularly known as the Washington Redskins, but the Court will refrain from using the team name unless reference is made to a direct quote where the name appears. Instead, he wrote, the team will be referred to as the Washington Team.
The note comes months after Messitte ordered attorneys in the case not to use the teams name in his courtroom, according to one of the lawyers.
Messitte, who was born in the District and attended Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School, said he had no comment when reached by phone Monday. My footnote is what it is, he said.
Team officials also had no comment.

More proof that a judge is just a lawyer with too much power.
The judge almost makes it to the “the truth is what I say it is” level.
And what’s the penalty for using it in a legal document. This is BOGUS!
Tell the judge that all these names came around to memorialize the Redskins so they wouldn't be forgotten. I believe one of the Roosevelt boys began this remembrance. It certainly wasn't dissing them. "I'm trying to recall the quote....IMOW..."If it wasn't for the white man, they would have killed themselves off."
I find the name of that judge offensive. Henceforth, he shall be referred to as “That Idiot Federal Judge in Maryland”.
The tyrants in black robes sure do have a problem with the pesky Bill of Rights. How can we be good, obedient commies and Nazis with crap like the First and Second Amendments out there?! Hrumpf! Hrumpf! Right Judgey?
Prohibited words are multiplying fast.
Husband and wife are verboten in California.
No lawyer here, but can’t this judge be removed from the case for a preexisting bias of some kind? This case does not involve a trademark issue, which perhaps could justify withholding the name
so be it! I will suggest that the Washington Redskins change their name to “The Washington Redskin Potatoes”. and then lets see if anyone complains.
Gee, I wonder what would happen if he presided over a case involving the United Negro College Fund.
Who instructed this Fecal “judge” to do this anyway? Who complained? I wonder if he even knows even one REAL Indian. Just one. And I’m not talking about “Indians” from the Fauxcahontas Warren tribe who spent the 60s running around in beaded Indian headbands.
The judge was making an application to be the next supreme court nominee?!!?
Peter Principle at work.
Sounds like an appeal for judicial prejudice would be a slam dunk.
and how about all of those Asian restaurants that use the words “Fuk” and Fooking” in their names.or just Japanese names with the letters F,U,and K in them? should they be changed legally?
How about “The Washington Foreskins”? It would get the Jewish vote.
As we Jews say, “gives new meaning to the word Snippet”.
Sounds like this judge is prejudiced against the Washington (redacted).
That would be fitting for the locale also. Would honor all the pri@#$ in DC.
is redneck an offensive racial slur?
