Missile Has a Range Exceeding 150 Nautical Miles, and is Designed to be Difficult to Spot by Radar

FARNBOROUGH, England— Raytheon Co. RTN +0.64% is teaming up with Norways's Kongsberg Gruppen AS KOG.OS -0.73% A to build a new anti-ship weapon as it deepens its battle with Lockheed Martin Corp. LMT +0.50% in the market to sell high-end missiles to the Pentagon.

Kongsberg is developing the Joint Strike Missile for use with Lockheed Martin's F-35 Joint Strike Fighter to attack ships and land targets from great distance. Under the deal being announced today at the Farnborough air show, Raytheon will build the missile for the U.S. if the Pentagon becomes a buyer, said Taylor Lawrence, the head of the Raytheon's missile unit.

"The U.S. Navy is very interested," Mr. Lawrence said in an interview.

The Pentagon's shift in focus to the Asia-Pacific region, where control of sea routes is deemed more critical than the army centered battlefields of Europe and Afghanistan, has increased demand for high-end maritime weapons systems. High Chinese military spending has helped increase demand among the U.S. military for more sophisticated equipment.

Back in the early 60s my Father worked at Eglin AFB where they were developing the skybolt missile which was essentially the same thing.

This was a joint U.S. British operation and the British had basically put all their eggs in that basket. Out of nowhere Bob McNamara cancelled it leaving the British sort of just hanging.

I can remember their being British officers all over the place at Eglin then suddenly they were all gone.

The Chinese developed some decent shore to ship missiles to clear the Taiwan straits of hostile naval elements in the event of war with ROC. It was an important strategic necessity. They were even given access to an American guidance system during the Clinton administration. Unfortunately they have sold these missiles to Iran which has fortified the narrow shallow Persian Gulf. The gig blue water ships of the US Navy and 10-12,000 brave young American sailors are at grave risk.

Kongsberg is a maritime simulators company. I have 12 of their part-task radar simulators at the Coast Guard Academy.

Didn’t know they were also into the real thing for armed forces.
