A man who spent nearly 20 years locked in a state psychiatric ward in Lincoln is suing doctors for malpractice, saying he was never mentally ill during his time there.
He was sent to the Lincoln Regional Center that year. For the next 20 years, regional center doctors and others involved in Montin's treatment relied on information from initial police reports that said Montin was delusional, rather than court records that showed otherwise.
But last year, a regional center psychiatrist found that it was medicine Montin had taken for his injured back that had led to a medication-induced psychosis. When Montin stopped taking the medication, which was long before he was committed to the regional center, the psychosis was gone. Doctors at the center simply didn't believe him — for 20 years — when he insisted he was not delusional.

I am sure you all followed the situation of Jessica Pelletier, who was put into a psychiatric ward, because doctors wouldn't recognize her mitochondrial disease, even though she was previously diagnosed and treated for that. I think if it hadn't been for the media publicity -- such as Huckaby, she may have ended up like the poor guy in this article...

The local media heat came from Howie Carr. Nobody in Mass politics pays attention to national media.
Here is my theory: Doctors are too ready to prescribe meds to someone who is experiencing normal situational depression (death of a family member, loss of a job, etc.) They get them hooked on the pharmaceutical highway, and after that the person is forever messed up with or without the “meds” or worse.
It IS scary. A bureaucrat could determine you are mentally unfit, for example, if you do not celebrate homosexuality. Then you disappear.

I think that is exactly true, but the problem goes to another level. Doctors are too ready to prescribe because of the insidious effects of a compensation culture. Ironically in this case, its a means of protecting themselves from lawsuits.
I have Chrons Disease. Back in the late 70s before it was understood, and as a child, I had a room full of ‘medical professionals’ try to get me to ‘admit’ that my abdominal pains were the result of ‘mommy hitting you’.
Several surgeries, one flatline and a lifetime of steroids (with their own problems later) I can safely say as an adult that no, mommy wasn’t the problem. Doctors looking for an easy paycheck were.
Jessica, 25, also suffers from mitochondrial disease (but it's under control).
But, of course, the quacks at Boston Children's Hospital dismissed that fact, along with the earlier diagnosis of Tufts Medical Center. They had a mission: validating their quack theories of somatoform disorder (all in her head)! And Justina was going to be their experimental animal! And, most important, they had the State of Massachusetts on their side! They were going to win this battle no matter what!
Fact is, BCH and the Commonwealth owe Justina a living for the rest of her life. BCH for being quacks, and the Commonwealth for being pigs wearing the badge of authority!

A similar situation occurred during the 1980s at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto with a tragic ending. A boy was brought in with severe abdominal pain. Their diagnosis was that it was psychosomatic, and the “therapy” they prescribed was to make him clean up the mess every time he vomited. He died the next day from a twisted bowel.
Confined 20 years to a mental facility DESPITE being cleared in criminal court, freed only after his lawyer could convince a head shrinker with a brain to READ THE F’N TRANSCRIPT instead of only the initial police report. OMG
So Obama is apparently taking the same back medicine.
The Business Socialist crowd (who supports government protecting business at any cost) will not like this....but this guy should sue the facility....and every person involved...until they are bankrupt
After my husband’s death, my doctor wanted to prescribe anti-depressives. I insisted that I was not depressed but grieving. Looking back, I think he was right and I was somewhat depressed but the thing is, I got through it without special meds, and adjusted to my situation without that crutch.
Even more to the point, what kind of a medical facility is it that relies on information from 20 years before to determine if a person is still sick.
Neither cops nor the courtroom are a particularly logical venue by which to determine a person’s present state of mental health.
I went for most of my young life a lot like that. One horse doctor even diagnosed me with malaria. Where one gets that in the Adirondacks I dunno but anyway...
Mid teens my grandfather carried me into the ER looking very pregnant (for a dude) with a 106 temp. They cut me open for the obvious burst appendix...that was just fine thanks. In fact, my appendix was about the only part of my intestines NOT inflamed and ready to rupture, along with and several abscesses that had.
Over the next few/several years I had a chunk of my intestines removed through multiple surgeries. They could not get under control with the known drugs and steroids in megadoses. Fortunately it went into remission on it’s own.
The moral of the story is that several medical professionals’ should have been unemployed. But weren’t.
My stomach looks like I lost a sword battle with a Ninja. Which I’m OK with. The rest of the crap? Not so much.
I’m fine with the fact that Docs aren’t God and don’t know or can’t fix everything. But when they just claim ‘mental’ out of laziness or agenda, they should fry for the hell they cause.
Well, at least he had free healthcare for 20 years. /s
