IRS to Rubber Stamp Tax-Exempt Status for Most Charities After Scandal

IRS head touts “efficiencies" but some groups fear fraud.

Amid ongoing controversy over its scrutiny of non-profits, the Internal Revenue Service has decided it will no longer screen approximately 80% of the organizations seeking tax-exempt charitable status each year, a change that will ease the creation of small charities while doing away with a review intended to counter fraud and prevent political and other non-charitable groups from misusing the tax code.

As of July 1, any group that pays a $400 fee and declares on a three-page online form that it has annual income of less than $50,000, total assets of less than $250,000 and is in compliance with the tax code requirements of a charity will automatically be allowed to accept donations that are tax-deductible for the donors. Previously the groups had to fill out a detailed 26-page form, submit multiple supporting documents and provide a narrative description of their intended activities....

Just another variation of “Heads we win/tails you lose”. Since far more leftists form groups than the right they will still retain the advantage - plus they are far more likely to be abusers of the nonprofit rules.

I did it the old way but it was a PIA. The amounts of monies they are talking about are not worth monitoring by the IRS. The $400 fee seems likes it’s more than I paid, though.

doing away with a review intended to counter fraud

The IRS should be reduced in size by about 99%. That would help reduce the crime rate in DC by a substantial amount. Any fraud is minor by comparison.

Hookay! I’m running a charity that raises great citizens from helpless infants. Not one of our three girls turned out to be a criminal, drug addicted, bed wetting liberal. With that proven track record, we now want to set up a charity for helping to raise equally great grandchildren.

Good. Less money for them and I guess they’ve backed off from implementing the onerous rules they sought.

Next stop, end their employees union.

After that, flat, flat, flat and reduce their staff by 60%.

Oh yeah, and I STILL want to see Lois Lerner go to prison and lose her pension.

Well, that’s awfully convenient.

After you took the wind out of the sails of many good people or simply let others die on the shoals.

Sounds like the Dems have found a new way to create more charitable institutions to pay for their candidates.

Prior restraint is always wrong.

I have no doubt that there have been, are, and will be, organizations claiming tax exempt status for purely political purposes.

The appropriate response is punishment after the fact.

They got what they wanted: Obama re-elected in 2012.

Now they can close the barn door after the horse got out.
