MOSCOW Russia is warning Ukraine of irreversible consequences after cross-border shelling from the battle-worn east struck Russian territory Sunday, reportedly killing one Russian citizen and injuring two others.
This incident highlights the extremely dangerous escalation of tensions in the Russian-Ukrainian border and may have irreversible consequences, the responsibility for which lies on the Ukrainian side, Russias Foreign Ministry said in a statement Sunday, calling the incident an aggressive action.
Russian officials summoned the Ukrainian charge daffaires to the foreign ministry in Moscow to protest the civilians death, which they say occurred when the Ukrainian army in the Luhansk region shelled Russias Rostov region across the border, hitting a residential building.
Ukrainian officials vehemently deny that they have fired on Russian territory and are questioning whether Russia is making up details surrounding the incident simply to build a case against Ukraines military.
Another propaganda source? /sarc
For cripe’s sake, quit whining about Russia Today.
Correct me if I am wrong on this... Elected government of Ukraine forced out by protesters; Russia & government of Ukraine that was formed somehow get into it; people in the eastern part of Ukraine vote with Russia but the west says this election (like the first one) doesn’t count; a truce is called; the current Ukraine government calls off the truce and fighting resumes.
The elected but deposed government is not considered to be the legitimate government, but the one that somehow formed and took over is. Both elections have been called illegitimate by the US because it didn’t like the results. The protesters who overthrew the elected government are legit, but the people who are opposed to the I-don’t-know-how-it-came-about government are rebels. And Russia is the only dishonest player in this?
Would someone explain to me how we know who is what, what is going on, and why anyone believes what really happens in this conflict? Does it not appear to the rest of the world that the US only promotes democracy when the people it wants to win are elected? And why do we trust any government, including our own, to tell us the truth?
As someone said, the first casualty of war is the truth.
You pretty much got it right...
The EuroMaidan “supporters” would like everyone to forget that if it weren’t for the coup, NONE of this would be happening, people wouldn’t be dying in droves, and Crimea would still have a Ukrainian Flag flying over it.
I'll try.
Elected president of Ukraine forced out by protestors because it reneged on a deal with the EU because of Russian pressure. Russians are miffed, because they consider Ukraine a vassal state, seize Crimea, conduct a sham election. Separatists in the east seize various towns with Russian help, claiming broad popular support. There is fighting on both sides, truces or not.
The deposed president flees to Russia, replaced by a democratically-elected president. Most of the MPs remain. No voting occurred in the separatist regions because the separatists, and Russia, wouldn't allow it.
The Russians, as always, claim it is our fault.
with good reason. John McCain tells Ukraine protesters: 'We are here to support your just cause' which basically gave them a green light to overthrow their government. Not the first war McCain has started recently.
And the US, as always claims it is Russia’s fault. You have more faith in the US government than I do. All governments lie.
Considering that the EU is as socialist or maybe more so than Russia and that Europe is being taken over by Muslims, I don’t see how aligning oneself with Europe is some big blow for freedom.
It appears that you are looking to excuse Russia’s behavior. Good luck. You won’t find your excuse in the EU’s socialist tendencies, preference for Muslims, or John McCain.
Pining_4_TX always claims not to understand situation in Ukraine. To coin a phrase: “here are none so blind as those that refuse to see,” so basically my suggestion is don’t try! :D
I’m not excusing anyone. I don’t like being lied to and that is what is going on. Nobody here can say what is really happeing there, and for some reason Americans want to instantly see one side as completely bad and the other as pure as the driven snow. It’s fantasy.
Russia is not a blank slate, and Russian history (or anyone else's) did not begin in 2013.
They ‘chose’ Ukraine for the conflict....and here we are.
Interesting Putin is now operating in Cuba and South America....in our backyard....Putin makes no deals out of the goodness of his heart....dropping Cuba's humongous debt, in the billions, you can't help wonder what he got in return?...and what deals he will forge in S.America as well.
“....Americans want to instantly see one side as completely bad and the other as pure as the driven snow. Its fantasy.”
No ma’am, with due respect, it is reality not fantasy. A sadly necessary reality. There is an old saying that, “What is the difference between a freedom fighter and the terrorist?...the answer being...It depends on which side they are on.” When a group is “friendly” towards the US (or at least in our best interests) they will (of necessity) get our support. That is how the real world works. It is NOT about spreading “democracy” per se, it is about preserving the U.S. way of life (a republic).
So the US, the Atlantic Council (whatever the heck that is), and NATO did not "choose" Ukraine. Geography, Russian history, and Ukraine's memory of Russian history did.
One good thing about Putin and Cuba/S. America? When something happens, he won't be able to blame NATO. He will try, anyway.
The irreversible consequences were triggered when KGB Putin invaded Ukraine unprovoked and occupied her territory. Brutal war with no end end sight between Russia and Ukraine is now inevitable. This war will be fought not just in Ukraine, but in Russia. Russians will pay a price in blood for their stupid evil savagery.
....”the Atlantic Council (whatever the heck that is), and NATO did not “choose” Ukraine”....
Well if you don’t know who or what the Atlantic Council is then no wonder you get it wrong so often.
But they most certainly did “choose” Ukraine and the US was obviously supportive if not the lead.
Putin doesn’t give a rats buns what nation leaders think now...any more than Israel does. They are moving to do what they believe needs doing of because they know that they can withstand any who oppose them....it’s just that simple.
There was never any truce. The “truce” was a unilateral ceasefire called by the Ukrainian side which the Russian ethnic separatist terrorists never agreed to or abided by at all.
I want some of whatever you are drinking.
“A major fault with that reasoning is the assumption that Putin is just a nice guy who wants “respect.” “
Nobody paying attention thinks Putin is “nice guy”. He is a cold, calculating SOB raised to Machiavellian thinking.
That said, because of that very Machiavellian thinking, he understands what is happening in DC and other capitals today better than Obama and the Radical Socialist Ideologue minions he is surrounded by.
They wanted to “get back” at Putin for stopping Obama’s attack on Syria, and they chose the already existing urest in Ukraine to do it. They handed Putin a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and he took advantage of it.
The result of that is what we are seeing today. Ukraine in Chaos, and the Obama administration calling the shots, while the cronies scoop up the assets, like Biden’s son, and Kerry’s nephew, are doing.
The very same “Moderate” Syrian Rebels that Obama almost went to war to support, creating a “Caliphate” in Iraq, while Putin outmaneuvers “The Smartest Man Ever Born!” again, by providing real help to the Iraq government.
An “Eastern Bloc” is forming before our very eyes, instigated in large part by the weakness and indecision shown in DC.
