As the nation deals with an immigration crisis at its borders, businesses are stepping up their calls for reform.
The Obama administration is desperately trying to deal with the influx of tens of thousands of unaccompanied children crossing into the United States.
The crisis may deflect Congress' attention away from doing anything meaningful over the nation's immigration laws, said Thomas Donohue, CEO of the Chamber of Commerce, which represents the largest U.S. businesses. But the group still renewed its push for immigration reform.

Funny, there’s lots of qualified, credentialed people over 50 who can’t find work.
IOW, at that price
Total BS. How much thicker can CNN lay it on?
For a capitalistic system to survive, the middle class needs to thrive and be able to consume beyond the basic necessities. The age of automation and technology in general has made productivity go up while wages and labor go down. Capital investors and stock holders and CEOs are reaping the benefits of this process that continues to scale.
They also use regulatory capture and monopoly behavior to shut out small businesses and job creators to lock in their profits. At some point, drunk on more and more profits, they will cut their own throats as they destroy the middle class. Of course, greed and stupidity will trump logic and strategic planning leading to a work force collapse before they clue in to the consequences of their behavior. We are in a transition state based on technology that requires different thinking than what worked for the industrial age.
The test is simple. Can you query a SQL database. Can you debug a line of code. If you notice and fix the other obvious flaws in the line of code and query the database in an efficient manner we hire you. We don't care if you speak English. We need a hundred more like you.
H1B lasts 3 years and you can renew for another 3 years. At sometime in the process if you are an employee in good standing we apply for a green card. That process can take three years. All the visas cost the company over $5000. The worker has to pay something as well.
All employees are free will. We do not pay anyone but the employee. And we HAVE TO PAY THE RATE THE GOVERNMENT SETS. Which is now $80,000 in Chicago. Its the law. If we don't do it, we can be sued. And worse, we will not be able to hire H1Bs anymore. The employees can get another job at anytime. The visa can be transferred if the employee quits to work somewhere else.
For an H1B or green card we have to post the job with the pay. If anyone can pass the test we have to hire them which we do. But we still hire the H1B candidate as well because its so hard to find good programmers.
I would love to hire Americans instead. They speak English.
I don't have to pay for the H1B and green card process. And I can explain things easier to them.
I think what you are describing could be true of contract programmers. We never use them. I don't think its true. But I could not be sure. And in that case the company providing the contract programmers would be breaking the law. Also, it could be true for the outsourced programmers who live in China and India. Who knows what happens there. But both those cases would go away if more programmers were available.
Let me just say that bad programmers are worth less than nothing to me. They do bad work which has to be thrown out and replaced. And in the process many testers and project managers have to double their efforts and time. Don't try and tell me that there are lots of Americans you can train. Your wrong. Its like hiring someone off the street and making them the starting pitcher for a major league team.
If you want to hire Americans, start by firing teachers. Most teachers have soft degrees, English, history, education. These people cannot teach math above the 5th grade. I know they do. But they do not do it well. Americans should be learning calculus by Freshman year. That means algebra and geometry before high school. And they should take logic or programming starting in 5th grade as well. Our teachers generally suck at this. And of course they should. Since they have never taken a real math class after high school.
When I was in Chicago I could have taken your test, blown it away, and still ask only five figures. Where on earth were you?
After taking all those applications and stuff, they will tell the government that nobody who is qualified was found and request an H1B visa.
I’m certain that Microsoft will be hiring these illegals. Screw you gates..
I was in Cupertino a few months ago at a meeting with Apple. Beautiful facilities with 10 asian folks representing Apple and two Americans. The Americans were the lawyer and the marketing guy. All these asians were extremely well paid with great facilities, free food, they owned great cars. I saw no slavery. I also saw no technical Americans either.
that’s really it right there. Nobody accepts that most of us have to start at the bottom and work our way up and that life is hard, unfair, and frequently unforgiving of mistakes. The hard truth is is that true conservative values are the only thing that will save a poor boy in this Barackalypse. For most poor folks, drinking from the Democrat’s cup of poison will, at best, provide you a life of medicrity. at worst, it will lead you to utter ruin and disaster.
I’m not sure that’s true for technical workers. But I would say that I have seen lots of tech workers quit because they can easily get work. And the taxes are so high that they can quit to travel or ski or something for an extended period of time and then get a job when the money runs out. There are lots of web-sites dedicated to this.
These people may be able to get unemployment if they are let go. But they can’t quit. I have seen young people just quit a six figure job. They point out that they can’t take home very much because of taxes. And they would like to hike Machu Picchu while they are still young. And off they go.
I know they really do it to. Because they send back pictures for a year. Sometimes they come back and sometimes they move to another city.
You are right. I can’t spell my way out of a paper bag. But I got a Math, Statistics and Computer Science degree. My take home has been over $500K for quite awhile until I quit because of high taxes. While I was working I had people proof my writing for me. I miss that.
I know the farmers have a different gig. They can hire migrant workers with no IDs. I think the meat processing plants do it too. Not sure why they get away with it.
But those are not tech jobs. I was referring to tech jobs. Those are the immigrants we need.
If they can write a SQL query and they know how to write web apps or mobile apps I am sure they can find work.
Credentials are not very valuable. I got my degree in 1984. The world has changed. And few software firms believe in computer related credentials. They can be bought.
Can they pass a test on the newer technology? Do you have have business knowledge that you can add to your technical knowledge? If yes. They should be able to find work.
The technical Americans where fired after they trained the Asians. The Lawyers would be fired if they could be replaced by H1B1 holders as well.
I do my own proof reading. And it shows!
Give me a resume and I will send it in. If you can pass the test you will be offered $80K. If you have 5 years of experience you will get $100K. We are hiring now. We have no limit to the number of good programmers. If we can find them we can hire them.
Monster.com and Careerbuilder.com both have hundreds of tech job postings. Dice.com and several others have them too. Also try Linkedin.
I have a skill that normally works as a curse. I can read right over any flaw, getting the gist of the writing, no matter the number of errors. But, that means I am a horrible proof reader. I have noticed there are lots of people (mostly male) who are just like me. I wish I was a better proofer.
