When Kenner Police entered the front door at 2409 Kentucky Ave. early Tuesday morning, they found Melissa Desilva hysterically crying as she bent over the body of her estranged husband, Lyndell Desilva, who lay in the hallway of the home they once shared, dying of gunshot wounds.
Melissa Desilva, 34, was apologetic as she tried to render aid. "She said she didn't mean for this to happen," said Sgt. Brian McGregor, spokesman for the Kenner Police.
Paramedics transported Lyndell Desilva, 38, to Interim LSU Hospital in New Orleans where doctors pronounced him dead a short time later. As investigators spent the rest of the morning interviewing Melissa Desilva, her four children and other relatives, a narrative began to emerge of unreported domestic abuse, which culminated in a deadly confrontation between the couple of 16 years.
"Things have escalated, and here we are today with him being shot," McGregor said.
Kenner Police did not book Melissa Desilva in her husband's death on Tuesday. "If we felt there was probable cause to make an arrest we would have made one. But we thought it best to refer this matter to the district attorney's office," McGregor said.
Melissa and Lyndell Desilva had been married for 12 years with four children: a 10-year-old boy and three girls, ages 14, 12 and 4. But the couple separated two months ago, McGregor said, because of worsening domestic violence.
Though Kenner Police have no records of phone calls or reports to authorities, relatives of both Lyndell and Melissa Desilva, including the couple's children, told investigators that she suffered years of abuse at his hands, according to McGregor.
"According to members of both families, all the way around, they all witnessed physical and verbal abuse," said McGregor. Even the children described seeing bruises on their mother over the years.

That's a little better than Amy Bishop, who basically said that the roomful of dead people she left in her wake didn't exist.
we’ve had two sets of killings today in my area by husbands....in one incident, he strangled his wife and his dtr....in another, he just came to her work place and shot her cold dead....
I blame her.
She should have shut the hell up and left years ago....

Terrible. One person never relenting on demeaning remarks and the other constantly making room for them to grow a real and proper pair.
Feel sorry for the gal and now she’ll live with her action forever.
She’s sorry now, but the fact is, she waited and waited and absorbed all the abuse. If what she claims happened is true, she allowed her three daughters to see her allowing this to continue, all the while producing more and more children, all the while sinking deeper into this acknowledged trap. Sad that she didn’t seek help at least for herself to get out, vs facilitating it all. The boiling point did not have to be the only way out. One wonders if she kept this secret from her own family or were they cut off from all outsiders.
Unreported physical abuse is an everyday occurance and I have nothing but sympathy for the abused who are too afraid or too controlled to come forward and ask for help.......
What happens in Kenner, stays in Kenner.
One good outcome of her doing the shooting instead of the cops - their dog is still alive.
Amy Bishop was a nut case. I can’t understand why she was not institutionalized when she shot her brother.
Cause her very well-connected uber-liberal politician mother got her away from the police after they arrested her, and then saw to it that all records pertaining to the incident were "lost."
It's all in the article.
“Even the children described seeing bruises on their mother over the years.”
A curious construction. Who would be more likely to see bruises or abuse than the children?
I know I’m building on scant evidence but it sounds as though the woman has been putting up with a lot, likely for the sake of the children and trying to save face publicly by not seeking help. However now, these same kids will have to live with memories of a frequently violent and abusive father and a mother who killed him. Prayers for her and her kids.
If I remember correctly the police record was kept a ‘secret’ and was not made light of until after she shot 6 people.
Yet, she stayed with him for 12 years.= Co-Dependancy IMO.
Talk about a perfect example of the psychosis that creates battered wives. The guy beats her and treats her like crap. She finally defends herself, yet is hysterically crying about his death and apologizing when the police come. If it was anyone else who beat her, she would have no guilt about killing them. Its a bizzare and very sad mental state.
I’ve known women who hurt themselves and blamed others. I think it is a common method used by psychotics to gain attention.
She should have shut the hell up and left years ago....
That what you wished BBell had said, but it's not even close.
Evil people seem to exist everywhere.
I dated a wonderful gal who was the ex-wife of an abusive alcoholic. It wasn't until he pulled over to the side of the road in their car, broke her jaw then kicked her out between Detroit and Ann Arbor that she finally had enough.........
