Football (soccer) is a veritable folk-religion in Brazil. They take it very, VERY seriously. It’s like a matter of national pride; losing as they did tonight - an absolute stomping on their home turf no less - is for many Brazilians a profound emotional shock.
Yeah, it’s just a game. But for Brazilians, it’s a lot more than just a game.

There was a column in the sports section this morning that after Brazil lost the final the first time they hosted the World Cup in 1950 to Uruguay 2-1 a number of fans committed suicide. Yeah it is way beyond rational down there.
