Monday through Friday, my full-time job is cleaning restrooms at Van Nuys High School. But that work is not the hardest part of my life. The hardest part is saying goodbye to my 4-year-old son when he asks me not to go to work again. In order to make ends meet, I also work weekends and nights.
I know Im lucky to have a full-time job as a facility attendant in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Ive done that for 10 years, and some days are better than others, but I like the work, and my co-workers are a supportive second family. We dont interact much with students, but those of us who do custodial work are eyes and ears for teachers and administrators. If I see a student needs help of any kind, I take pride in letting the right people know.
The one thing that hasnt been good about the job is the pay. When I started 10 years ago, I made $8.65 per hour; now I make $9.85 per hour. But I just learned thats going to change. SEIU Local 99, the union that represents me and more than 30,000 other school workers here, just negotiated a new contract that will raise my pay to $15 per hour by 2016.

I am all for gainful work. I really am.
But if this guy is griping about the same job, at the same pay, at the same place for 10 years he has failed himself. If he had any pride in himself or any motivation he coule have made so much more for himself. After 10 years at any job if you aren’t happy about it and don’t like the pay leave. If after 10 years at the same place you are still an entry level employee I have no sympathy.
This guy has followed the liberal line that he is a victim of circumstance and his only hope is to give up his ambition and control to some jerk he’s never heard of to run his life.
Did you see the article about the cities that raised their minimum wage and didn’t lose jobs? I only read the headlines but I’d bet they added up all the part time jobs and came up even-steven.
Or her gas, rent, McDonald’s and everything else goes up because those people now have to pay $15 per hour too. Then $15 won’t be enough any more than $9.85 is now.
get promoted at a union job??
Sorry but with union jobs it is seniority that counts, not ability. This person can get any other job and get better pay. Why don’t they apply? At least try!
Okay, that’s hilarious! :-)
>>P.S. I started out cleaning bathrooms, too. I , however was not satisfied in doing that for the rest of my life and have worked to acheive more. Perhaps Raul should consider that.<<
He probably doesn’t speak English.
I have always thought it the height of arrogance for an individual to emigrate to a foreign country and then not learn that countries language. If I moved to a foreign country I would do my best to learn their language. As I had discovered as a teenager in Europe in the 1980’s even if you don’t speak the local language well you get credit for trying.

The one good thing about working for a school district is that you can always promote to higher paying jobs by just taking the exams. Custodian I can go to Custodian II and on up to maintenance worker, landscaper, and painting.
I’ve seen people retire after being an Cafeteria Worker I for 30 years when there was plenty of tests for Cafeteria Worker II or cafeteria managers.
Her hours won’t be cut and she won’t be out of a job. Taxpayers are picking up the tab, so no need for any reduction in spending. No bottom line - just up the confiscation of taxpayer dollars.
“Or her gas, rent, McDonalds and everything else goes up because those people now have to pay $15 per hour too. Then $15 wont be enough any more than $9.85 is now.”
I think this is working the other way around; the same Dems/libs that claim there is no inflation (so they don’t have to adjust entitlements) know that very real inflation has completely destroyed any motivation to work for the “old” minimum wage (which doesn’t buy much anymore). To lure people back into the workforce, they have to leave them with more than the same basic sustenance the government will give them for just sitting on their arses.
The price increases that are the inevitable result of minimum wages will be ON TOP OF the price increases workers have already seen.
But to your point 10 years should help seniority in such an entry level job
but yes he could have and should have tried
For 5 years of service, 10 years, 25 years, etc.
There were cafeteria workers who were receiving their "40 years" pins.
Now I'm sure they were nice people, and were probably at the top of their pay scale.
But I can't imagine working for 40 years in a hospital cafeteria.
At least it's honest work.
It made me think, though, when those elderly black women started, that the parking lot would have been filled with cars from the 30s-40s.
The doctors might have driven a "new" 1951 Buick.
But the nurses and support staff would have driven some real classics.
I used to clean restrooms at a high school. I got paid for 8 hours and was usually done in 3. Then we’d all sit around and watch TV until Midnight and clock out. We had 4 janitors for the campus and it could have been done by 2. It should have been done by 2.
This guy had better be a really good bathroom cleaner because the teachers aren’t going to take a pay cut to pay his increase in salary. Somebody’s going to be laid off and if he isn’t laid off, then his job duties are going to be increased.

Jore hoobcaps they are ready. Listo Calisto.
Every schoolboard in the strong Obama precincts operates the school maintenance "contractor" scam. If the head contractor doesn't clear $250,000, after kicking back to every Democrat in his venue, he is probably already incarcerated.
This school maintenance racket is so wide spread that it is taken for granted. Wanna meet the guy? Go to a school board business meeting if they let you in. Look for a guy who looks and talks like Al Sharpton, or a 300-pound Kayeesha in a tight print dress.. or both. That's who runs "school maintenance" where you live. So highly lucrative that they themselves could pay this now-legendary toilet scrubber $50/hour and still make it over to the Mercedes dealer.
As one school maintenance guy personally explained it to me, "I drops off the Mexicans and I picks up the check."
School Maintenance: Ho-Hum, Just another way to put your money in education.
BTW: Average turnout for schoolboard elections: sometimes under UNDER 20%.
