“it was most likely an errant missile fired by a U.S. naval vessel (or a naval vessel of another NATO country, which would offer a stronger explanation about the need to cover it up) conducting exercises off the south shore of Long Island that night.

Seeing how long ago it was, many sailors would have retired or left by now. It seems like someone would have either leaked info or come forward.

The same could be said for retired FBI agents, CIA officials, etc. -- right?

The first question to ask is: Do you believe the official government explanation? If not, then the second question is: What really happened?

If you look at the recovered pieces, as well as the pieces that have since gone ‘missing’ there is one scenario put forth that actually causes it all to make sense. There WERE reports and alerts that some terrorist group was going to attempt to shoot down an airliner leaving New York. There was a window during which time an airliner would still be low enough to be hit by the missile. There were (an admission later forced under oath) an unusual number of Navy vessels in the area. These ships did carry some of the most sophisticated anti-missile missile systems available at the time. Some of it still in the testing phase.

Unfortunately the early anti-missile systems took some time to acquire the target missile, correct course, and score a kill. Given the evidence, the most plausible theory is that someone did fire a missile at the aircraft, the navy missile did intercept it and destroy it, but it did it in such proximity to the aircraft that the exploding fragments took down the aircraft. The wreckage is not consistent with an actual warhead strike, but it is very consistent with fragments.

Realizing the aircraft had been hit, everyone went into panic and lock-down mode. The bad guys escaped - maybe. There are several reports of men being taken off of a a small boat and handcuffed, but are never heard from again.

And yes, Clintoon was a mastermind of controlling public opinion. If this had any chance to make him look bad, it would have been buried.
