Earlier this year, I attended an event with former House speaker Newt Gingrich, despite knowing of his stereotypical attitude towards Muslims. I realized then the power of one voice to change people's prejudices – and how rarely people like me use ours: I was the first Muslimah to whom he had ever spoken.
Yes, I am Muslim, and I am a Republican – and that's why I was at the Heritage Foundation panel on Benghazi last month, where I asked the now-infamous question about how conservatives deal with the vast majority of people of my faith who are peaceful. Americans don't expect minorities – especially Muslims – to be Republicans, and it happens often in conservative circles that I am the only Muslim woman in the audience.
I became Republican because I felt that my Islamic values – pro-life, pro-traditional family, pro-business, pro-trade – aligned best with the Republican party platform. I identified as a Democrat for several years when I was younger, but found it hard to defend liberal values as they were so often in conflict with my deeply-held beliefs.
Though I have been a Republican for a long time – and despite having had a tough time with my fellow Republicans in Oregon, where I lived until 2012 – I joined the Washington DC Republican Party earlier this year. They have all been kind and welcoming to me at their meetings, events and fundraisers, and I have made good friends in the GOP.
So the personal attacks by conservatives after my question at the Heritage event went viral came as somewhat of a surprise – though the support from the Republicans who reached out to me did not. As one of the few lobbyists among the 10,000 on Capitol Hill who is a practicing Muslim, I regularly

Bingo! Muslim may lie to unbelievers. Shia Muslims have almost unlimited license to lie to non-Muslims if the lie advances Islam, while Sunnis are allowed to "dissimulate" -- or conceal the truth from unbelievers. In this case, Saba Ahmed appears to follow the Sunni practice of Taqqiyah by refusing to give any direct answer that would hurt the cause of radical Islam. The West is in a war for its survival, but doesn't realize it yet.
I’ve known and worked with several patriotic Americans who also happened to be Muslim. I think the difference is they weren’t born in repressed Arab countries, but came here from modern parts of India, Egypt, Ghana, and the Philippines. They were also college educated, tech-savvy guys who were taught to take the Koran symbolically, not literally. Hence they are moderates, not fundamentalists. And to be honest, I’ve had more heated disagreements with Hindus and Catholics than with these guys, who were thoughtful and open minded, welcomed opposing viewpoints, and most of all were happy to be in the US.
As Michael Savage points out, there is a lot of common ground between moderate Islamic values and American social conservatism. We should be glad for that because it helps our side, even if just a little.
These guys I knew were happy to let their wives drive cars, kids eat at McDonalds etc. for which they caught heat from other Muslims in their mosque. But they stood their ground, and each said the same thing: we’re in America, and this is the American way.
As for terrorism: yes, it is definitely a divisive issue within the American Islamic community. It’s just not something they talk about openly, for obvious reasons. At least one friend of mine told me he had been approached by provocateurs in his mosque who wanted him to join the jihadi cause. He told them to pound sand. Another told me there was a serious split in his mosque between the African moderates and the Pakistani fundamentalists they shared the mosque with, and they were looking for a new worship space. A lot of them were doctors, scientists, and computer programmers who want nothing to do with jihad and just want to peacefully co-exist as free Americans with a shared African heritage.
That ideological split is the source of the violent inter-Islamic fighting all across modern Africa. In the past, African Muslims have traditionally been more moderate and willing to co-exist with their Christian and Animist countrymen, until recent times when violent jihadists and fundamentalist youth gangs started attacking villages and slaughtering everybody they considered infidels. But western media doesn’t acknowledge the true nature of this inter-Islamic war, which is coming from the Arab side of the African population.
Make no mistake, a large proportion of the victims of the Arab-African jihad are moderate Muslims, as well as Christians and Animists. We’re all infidels in the eyes of the fundamentalists.

I agree. Islam is not compatible with human civilization; cannot coexist peacefully with any civilized people or organization. People who follow islam will lie to the contrary, but they are just infiltrators with evil intent.

The ONLY Peace their ideology teaches is Peace through Islam....their meaning of peace is never apart from Islam ...it's meaning is always framed to appear deceptively similar to our idea of Peace. It's not and can never be so.
