Full title: US spending $252 a day per child to care for young illegal immigrants, fourth military base now housing site
With communities across the country pushing back on plans to locate young illegal immigrants in their area, the federal government is looking towards military bases to house the thousands of children streaming across America's southwestern border.
The Department of Health and Human Services announced yesterday it was no longer considering a Federal Emergency Management Agency facility in Anniston as a temporary housing location for undocumented children. On the same day, the Department of Defense announced a fourth military base will be opened as a shelter site.
"It's the right thing to do," Army Col. Steve Warren, a Pentagon spokesman, said.
The Pentagon has offered Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington, according to a report in Military.com. The base is home to a former summer camp which may be used as a housing location for as many as 600 children.
"We have offered this up to the Department of Health and Human Services to house the children while the Justice Department decides their fate," Warren said. "Those kids need a place to sleep."
Fort Sill, Oklahoma, Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas and Naval Base Ventura County in Southern California are currently housing as many as 2,572 children. The Military.com report said HHS has leased housing on the three bases for 120 days with an option to renew if needed.
High cost of care
Figures from Customs and Border Protection show 52,193 unaccompanied children age 17 and below - the vast majority from Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras - have been apprehended at the southwestern border from last Oct. 1 through June 15. The cost for caring for the children is about $252 a day.
The total cost of care is expected to top $2 billion this year and will be covered through HHS.
"They're arriving exhausted and scared, in need of food and water," said CBP Commissioner R. Gil Kerlikowske. "Our agency and the Department of Homeland Security have mobilized to address this situation in a way consistent with our laws and our American values."
Kerlikowske said there have been more than 220 deaths along the southwest border this year, including 34 water-related deaths, or drownings.
No, its not and Steve Warren is a disgrace to the uniform.
So ship these disease-ridden ignorant illiterate drains on our society right the heck home. Dump them in the middle of Mexico City, turn the bus around and gun for the border.
That exceeds my take home for a month. I’m supporting 6 people in 4 separate households. The tax man gets more of my earnings than I do.

I hate to be an asshole but someone has to say it. These kids are NOT my problem, they are NOT my countries problem and they SHOULD be promptly returned to where they came from.

One child: $252 per day!!!
Same child for 365 days= $91,980 per calendar year.
Administration claims 52,000 +++ have already come into USA in the first 6 months of this year.
$91,980 X 52,000 here already=== $4,782,960,000 in costs for these invaders for the next 365 they are here.
Administration kept telling us that 60,000 were expected to come over the border this year——which is an interesting ‘estimate’ since 52,000 were already here in less than 6 months.
Then, yesterday, this ‘estimate’ was raised to 80,000 in the media.
$91,980 per invader X 80,000 ==$7,358,400,000.
Since there seems to be no decrease in the invaders numbers, if you DOUBLE the 52,000 to 104,000, then a year’s expense to ‘take care of them’ is $9,565,920,000.
Obama is asking for $2 Billion to handle taking care of these invaders.....
I am a life-long bookkeeper. I don’t know a single person or any client I have ever had in over 40 years of doing bookkeeping that can take care of an expense of over $9.5 BILLION with only $2 BILLION.
The lies coming out of Washington are beyond belief.
“Processing’ of these invaders consists of taking some sort of ‘Identity’ from them (They have absolutely nothing in the way of ID that can be confirmed-—give us a break!!!) & turning them loose into a local community with instructions to return to the court within a few days.
The address they provide are most often bogus.
They are into the wind within minutes after walking out of the ‘processing center’ & ‘the court’. That means that they can end up in ANY COMMUNITY ANYWHERE in the USA within days.
Who is giving them the money to get here-—and who is giving them money to bus further into the USA???? NO oONE seems to be asking these questions!!! 7-9 days on busses thru Mexico-—who paid for those busses & how did they eat???
You can count on your community being overwhelmed within days of my typing this.
If you are not fighting back like those protesters in Murrieta—then, IMO, you are part of the problem, also.
All the sympathy efforts by the administration about ‘abused kids—raped girls—starving—homeless——orphans——
I would remind everyone who reads this that AMERICA already has ABUSED KIDS——RAPE VICTIMS-—STARVING KIDS— HOMELESS kids-———and ORPHAN KIDS-—of OUR OWN!!! We don’t need to take care of other country’s problems when we have our own home-grown problems. This is insanity!!!
I also remind you that those ‘starving kids’ in America have mothers on welfare with food stamps & they also get as many as 3 meals a day YEAR AROUND from the school cafeteria or food operations in the summer months.
Classes in Physical education have been eliminated in most elementary & middle schools all across the country. The kids who get more than 3 meals a day on your dime never get any exercise......& more than 50% of these kids are considered overweight or OBESE.
YOUR taxes & MINE have been supporting this fraud for more years than I wish to calculate.
BTW- I have a Social Security income of $1111 a month, which equals an annual income of $13,332. (After a 3 year period of no increases at all). Divide that by 365 & my income is $36.53 (rounding up) a day. With that money, I pay for groceries, power, heat, laundry soap, shampoo, gasoline, vehicle registration, property taxes, property insurance, clothes, vitamins, a small life insurance policy to bury me, and other incidentals of daily living.
It is a complete insult to ALL AMERICAN CITIZENS that Obama won’t close the border & is willing to subject us to the costs of almost 7 (SEVEN) times what I live on to take care of foreign invaders.
The boiling point is coming closer each day. IMO, Obama won’t like the end result.
I guess toeing the party line and looking for promotion. Or trying to hold on until retirement if not too far off.
It would be if Mexico did something like give us oil but even if Mexico did, the wun and the army of economic progress preventers wouldn’t allow it here. I could see the oil accepted and sent right to China at no charge.
