An employee of Germany's intelligence agency has been arrested on suspicion of spying for the US, reports say.
The man is said to have been trying to gather details about a German parliamentary committee that is investigating claims of US espionage.
German media say the man arrested this week is a 31-year-old employee of the federal intelligence agency, known as the BND.
The German federal prosecutor's office confirmed the man's arrest, but gave no other details.
A spokesman for Ms Merkel said she had been informed of the arrest, as had the members of the nine-strong parliamentary committee investigating the activities of foreign intelligence agencies in Germany.
"The matter is serious, it is clear," spokesman Steffen Seibert told the Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper,
Der Spiegel news magazine said the man was believed to have passed secret documents to a US contact in exchange for money.
However, one unnamed politician told Reuters news agency the suspect had offered his services to the US voluntarily.

Well, I’m certainly not gonna sit here and believe the NSA’s plaints about this. Entirely believable in my book.
Look what Obama has done with our allies and how he has covertly supported our enemies.
Allies check up on each other. Germany is not stupid. They probably had agents checking us, and we had agents checking them.
But, to arrest one of them says something important. It says that Obama has been busy burning bridges.
Obama has been a total disaster. It makes me indescribably furious that the news media still carries his water.
It’s his narcissism. He truly thinks he is Allah’s gift to the planet. Whatever he endorses and deems necessary is okay.
All about hating a Schwarzmann.
The buckets are beginning to show signs of rusting through. You can't pretend the worst president in the history of the (former) Republic is the best forever. Eventually the weight of the water causes the bottom to fall out from the rusty buckets.
We are probably only another dozen scandals or so before that happens.
Yes, Germany is sending a message.
>It makes me indescribably furious that the news media still carries his water.<
.
What can you expect? They’re cut of the same leftist cloth.
The folks with the same ends-justifies-the-means mindset that killed millions in the 20th century.
The American problem might be that the common German people see Putin much more as a friend than his US-colleagues. You guys are not the good ones anymore on our side of the big pond. There is a basic turnaround in the public opinion.
The problem goes deeper. We are not only speaking about Germany. In almost all European countries this mood is the same. Even the Poles, the once staunchest American advocates seem to have understood that the Americans are not necessarily our friends.

Obama is only the tip of the iceberg. This started a long time ago. The transatlantic friendship with all its economic and political benefits is a exclusive project of elites in the meantime. That was quite different in the past (WWII, Marshallplan, Kennedy as a “Berliner”, Berin airlift, Reagan at the Berlin Gate, NATO Double-Track Decision etc.). During the last decade America lost its aura of being a good hegemon in the European society completely. Therefore many important things could be in danger soon. Something very dangerous happened.
There are difficult times to come. Therefore even such strong nations like the US need its friends. Think about it.

The attendees were present for a rock concert if I’m not mistaken.
>> During the last decade America lost its aura
You’re implying that Bush’s actions against Iraq were the catalyst for the decline. Those early years that followed 9-11 demonstrated Europe’s toothless concern for Islam’s war against the US. If the US lost Europe’s love, the love was lost prior to George W Bush and 9-11.
>> Even the Poles, the once staunchest American advocates
Regarding Poland, it’s issue is with the Obama Admin’s feckless policies.
Nope. Of course we knew that the US policy in Iraq was wrong. Democratic nations are not suitable for pre-emptive strikes. A nation that wants to dominate another needs stamina. To transfer i.e. Germany into a satellite country after WWII it took decades and Bazillions of Dollars. Since Iraqs culture is in difference to Germanys something that is antithetic to the western christian judeo values of the US it was quite clear from the beginning, that a invasion would not be tolerated by the Iraqi population. The outcome was a fierce fight with 5000 death Americans and maybe 100.000 to 200.000 death Iraqis. A ethic desaster.
This is something, a democratic nation can not stand, since there was apart from strategic and economic needs no real reason for this invasion (we do not have to discuss the fakes of general Powell). It is not popular to give away the sons for a forsaken contry in the nowhere. Therefore your own people deselected the policy of an offensive preemptive behaviour in the election that took Obama into power.
This is something that should have been realized in advance. Therefore this war was completely wrong. The outcome is a desaster. Now we have to hope that the Iranians will take over there. Saddam would have been a much better solution for all of us. Thank you America.
9/11 is a different thing.
You said: “...Regarding Poland, its issue is with the Obama Admins feckless policies....”
The Poles supported you in Iraq and expected a “spechial relationship” (like the US-UK connection) in return. They were badly disappointed. Bush did nothing, Obama does nothing. In the meantime Germany and France invested Billions into the Polish economy. Therefore the Polish people turned to the EU in a notable manner.
Furthermore the Poles realized that they have power within Europe and their voice is heard (in sharp difference to the trans-atlantic relationship).
I would like to see those things turned. The Trans-Atlantic relationship is something our fathers bleeded for. It is very precious. The trans-atlantic brigde should be kept. But for a relationship you need a partner that is worth the effort. We do not want to be controlled by your Stasi and we do not want to be misused because of mean motivation. If you guys continue on this path the price will be very high.
The Americas and Europe are much more tied by common culture than Europe is tied to any other culture. The US and Canada are more tied with European culture than Europe is tied to any other culture. My point is simply that we have too many things in common for those ties simply to be set aside.
But it is possible to damage a relationship. Deceit, faithlessness, and double-dealing can make anyone rethink how they want to relate to you. What might have been close can suddenly become distant.
Obama, Bush 2, Clinton, Bush 1, Reagan: there is only one name on that list that I would say was unconcerned by deceit, faithlessness, and double-dealing.
