Obamacare has pushed us over the entitlements tipping point. In 2011 some 49.2 percent of U.S. households received benefits from one or more government programsabout 151 million out of an estimated 306.8 million Americansaccording to U.S. Census Bureau data released last October.
Currently, around 6 million to 7 million Americans who have signed up for Obamacare are receiving taxpayer-provided subsidies (though the administrations numbers cannot be trusted, its all we have to work with). There are another 3 million who have signed up for Medicaid.
That means some 10 million Americansor a total of about 161 millionare now getting government subsidies (though the final number might be somewhat lower since some may have been receiving benefits already).
Thus, perhaps 52 percent of U.S. householdsmore than halfnow receive benefits from the government, thanks to President Obama. And Mr. Entitlement is just getting started. If Obamacare is not repealed millions more will join the swelling rolls of those dependent on government handouts.

“Quit trying to save the system, its done. Save your family and prepare for the reset.”
Exactly.
See my post 160.
Nice summary.
“But attitudes can change once people are on the receiving end of benefits, even if they are owed those benefits. Seniors who support limited government and fiscal responsibilityin short, the exact opposite of Obamas policiesbecome very protective of their benefits.
If you opened a savings account when you were young and faithfully deposited money week after week, when you got to the point to start making withdawals, wouldn’t you be protective of your investment? Yes, I know SS is not a savings account, but the analogy still applies.”
If the bank stole the money in that account, would you expect everyone else opening new accounts to pay you?
“The crash is going to happen. I would rather have it happen on my watch, than put it off for my kids or grandkids.
so yes I will take action to bring it about, and I advise everyone to do the same. This is a tragedy of the commons, and it will end when the commons are destroyed.”
Ditto.
Plus I would want those old enough to have been taught our REAL history to be around for the rebuilding. The younger generations have been dumbed-down and would believe anything Herr Obama tells them.
“So the question becomes who do you stiff first? That is the argument”
The argument is bigger than that. And sadly I see the answer from all those caring more about receiving what is due them than anything else.
The question is - does getting a treasury benefit affect how one votes?
The founding fathers risked ALL, even their lives. But we are now a nation that wants the status quo, even if it means going bankrupt or putting it on our Children’s backs.
“Romney would have been EXACTLY like Obama.
Thats not a very bright thing to say. In fact, its just plain stupid.”
He was being sarcastic. It was so well done that you thought it was real;)
I’ve been paying taxes since I was 16, or earlier. I was drafted and served.
I’m now 66, still working and paying taxes, and to hell with anybody that challenges my participation in the rights, responsibilities and benefits of my country.
Any blanket condemnation or classification into just two camps, those who get no benefits (now) and those who do, is a gross oversimplification.
“But I resent the hell out of being singled out because you probably dont need the money”
Agreed.
Those that want to means test social security are trying to fix socialism with more socialism. Those paying in the most will not get all their money back -and those would be the ones cut. Plus, like gun control - the brackets for the means testing will get lower and lower. Let it start, and soon they will take a mile
We already worked it out, but thanks for the compliment...
I hear you. I really do.
The young folks today find themselves stuck catering to what is undoubtedly the most self-centered generation in our country's history. The seniors have huge numbers on their side (which translates into a ton of votes on election day) and their slogan has always been, "Pay me until I tell you to stop."
That said, not all of them are as bad as that. Many of them feel badly about what what they are doing to younger folks (who had nothing to do with passing or supporting these laws), but many of them haven't prepared for retirement and now feel stuck. In other words, not all of them are happy about being on the dole.
If we can't eliminate these senior benefits immediately (and politically we cannot), we should at least make people qualify for them based on real need. Our young people's lives are being ruined by what's going on now. You're right to be concerned.
I am planning to stay off of Medicare and SS. I don’t want to be a burden and although I will be living small, I wont make much of a dent.
Good for you. I’m hoping to be able to do the same thing. And, it looks like I can. ;-)
I see it is a done deal. I was skipping through the posts and spoke too soon ;(
I figured from reading other posts that you two would not disagree.
As a society we’re dead.
We desperately need to cut spending - and that’s never going to happen as long as a majority have their hands in the pot.
Don’t believe me? Tell any Freeper on Social Security on this board that we need to do away with that program.
Politicians have outfoxed us. They have us by the balls and now the only thing we can do is collapse.
Yes, we’ve had mail conversations and are on the same page. Thanks.
:)
“Join us?”
Thoreau was right, and I hope to be able to emulate his example to the extent that we can. I temper that though with the recognition that no man or woman can exist long term on their own. So tribe and location matter. See tagline.
16th does not negate/change any other Amendments, and it sure as sh*t didn’t give gov’t any other authority to start up SS, MediX, DoEduc, etc.
Well, when the pols figure that the young folk will be voting for a LOT longer time than the seniors, I suspect you’ll see a change...especially if/when the younger folk get their ducks-in-a-row via internet and social media.
As to your last point, I’m highly against ANY ‘means testing’; you’re talking outright theft based on nothing more than someone doing better than another (maybe on sheer LUCK). IMHO, it should end like it begin, one day and POOF.
Nice, but I don't know of even one politician in this entire country who will advocate that right now - too many voting seniors out there.
But, time is on your side. Keep on pushing'.
