Putin accused of betraying and abandoning Ukraine separatists

One of Russia’s best-known ultra-nationalists has claimed that separatists fighting in Ukraine feel betrayed and abandoned by President Putin.

Aleksandr Dugin said that he talks to some of the most prominent rebel leaders in east Ukraine “five to six” times a day by phone and that they share his disillusionment with the Kremlin. ....

Mr Dugin’s fiery calls for a revival of Russian imperialism have made him a familiar figure on state TV. ....

When Russia invaded and annexed Crimea in March he felt vindicated. When his friends led the charge into eastern Ukraine and began to set up a rebel state of Novorossiya (New Russia) there, he “sincerely believed” that Mr Putin would send troops in to support them and begin the process of restoring Russia to the imperial role lost with the fall of the Soviet Union.

Then momentum stalled and last week the president asked parliament to cancel his right to send troops to Ukraine, and Mr Dugin lost his job at Moscow State University.

He told The Times that that decision could not have been taken without the Kremlin’s approval and that it signposts an official loss of nerve on Ukraine.

“I am a kind of vanguard, forgotten and betrayed by the main forces, and that’s why I’ve been fired,” he said.

He feels “completely abandoned” by Mr Putin, who he thinks is trying to cut his losses and make peace. He accused him of “hesitating, going to deal with Poroshenko and encouraging Nazi troops to destroy Novorossiya”.

He expects the rebel fighters will be crushed, Ukraine will be egged on by the West to attack Crimea and Mr Putin will be forced to go to war anyway but from a weaker position.

Pupin pulled his head out long enough to realize he wasn’t going to be idolized across the West, for acting like Hitler.

Who knew...

As for his nationalists, Hitler had them too. Sadly, he listened to them.

Only time will tell whether Pupin does.

When the new Ukrainian President offered a cease-fire, the obstinate Putin angrily rebuked him and accused him of issuing an ultimatum. Now Putin is practically begging the Ukrainians to extend the cease-fire. What a difference a week makes, huh?
