I’ll be the first to admit, I did not know ~gypped~ was a racial slur. Learned something new today.

Yeah, she said “gypped”. She meant to say ‘jewed”.

in her defense, no one knows where that comes from. It’s like when you say there is a “chink in the armor”

Gypped is supposed to be derived from Gypsy. Today, that’s considered racist against Gypsies or as they are otherwise known the Roma. As another poster indicated, it is akin to saying someone “jewed you down.”

I still don't see how it's a racial slur. Just one more thing for someone in the 2% to whine about.

“The term “gypped” is derived from the word “gypsy,” which refers to the Romani people. It’s used to describe one who swindles or cheats someone and has many negative connotations.”

I’m with you - I’ve used the word all my life. I’m certainly no fan of Michelle, but she’s given us more than enough ammo to go after her in many other areas. I give her a pass on this one...and I’m with her too, I’m no fan of Gypsies either.

Now if she had used the term “Jewed”, that would be different in my book...as it points much stronger towards a specific group of people and is not an everyday word, at least for most people.

It is not a racial slur if it was not used in the context or someone did not know it was one.

The likely reason you didn't know is that it is not. Virtually any word can be a racial slur in the minds of small-minded people.

One can learn a lot from Free Republic but this isn't one of them.

“I did not know ~gypped~ was a racial slur”

We grew up using that term and never knew where it came from. But then, we handled our own bullies back then, too. We didn’t whine about everyone else.
