Baghdad, Iraq -- Reports that Syrian warplanes carried out a cross-border attack on Iraqi towns this week is further evidence of the blurring between the two countries' borders as they face an offensive by Islamic extremists.
At least 57 Iraqi civilians were killed and more than 120 others were wounded by what local officials say were Syrian warplanes that struck several border areas of Anbar province Tuesday.
These border cities are among those under the control of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, which seeks to create an Islamic caliphate that encompasses portions of Iraq in Syria.
Reports of the Syrian incursion into Iraq is a reminder that the civil war in Syria and the unrest in Iraq are not isolated, but linked in ways that threaten the security of both.
Sabah Karkhout, head of Iraq's Anbar provincial council, told CNN that Tuesday's air attacks struck markets and fuel stations in areas such as Rutba, al-Walid and Al-Qaim.

Time for John Kerry to issue another stern warning.
Well its not like we’re going to stop Obama’s savage horde from overrunning the mideast.
A good start
What, me worry?
Assad has indeed claimed the mantle of fighting terrorists. His wife comfortable in England, former investment banker herself, just ordered a double martini...dry, with three olives got that!
Obama has succeeded in making Assad a hero, a crowning moment in his foreign policy...so far, it will get much worse.
I don’t trust journalists enough to take this story seriously. Is that 57 women and young children, a dozen terrorists who were not in uniform, or two dead camels and a wounded goat with the number rounded up?
Been cheering for the Syrian team for quite some time. And for Iraq, it is really quite fair to Blame Bush.
Who am I rooting for at this point?
that is wrong and bs, total bs.
Assad seems good at hitting civilians. He should try for hitting military targets sometime. Just a thought.
Making Assad a hero....
And that is the unbelievableness of all this. Assad is helping them fight ISIS in Iraq and that is the air power they wanted. But if he fights the same people on his own side of the border, then he’s fighting the people that we arm to take him out.
Assad is crapping his drawers. He knows that soon the tide will begin rising in Syria again and Allepo is certainly toast. With the new weapons and troops he is in peril.
Worse than that! He should write them a very stern letter, and include a photo of him from Vietnam. That will scare them into compliance.
It’s always civilians. Makes better headlines.
