A petition drive to divide California into six separate states was active on Saturday and Sunday in Los Angeles, aimed at getting the plan on the ballot in 2016.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Timothy Draper, a venture capitalist from Menlo Park, is spearheading the current effort and has injected $2 million dollars into the project so far.
The optimistic Draper argues that a truncated California will dissolve bureaucratic gridlock in Sacramento and will be more conducive for business. Draper told the Times back in April that "California has become the worst managed state in the country
It just is too big and too ungovernable."

Six Cali’s no way. We only need two- East California and West California. The east would be red, the west would be blue.
I would be quite happy to fire the Sacramento Tyrants.
All of this is academic nonsense.. but for the sake of argument I find it hard to believe that liberals (that run California) would allow a split to occur that gives pubs half or more of the new states. Maybe their gerrymandering work is not complete yet. :-)
Based on the distribution shown, it sounds like a grand idea. I’d like to see Ohio broken into three states, and Illinois into two. PA should be three. NY should be at least two. VA should be two, also.
The added Congressional headcount would add to the Electoral Vote count, and the new distribution would better represent areas currently under-represented in presidential elections.
This is NOT a bad thing.
california has become a de facto suburb of tijuana.
I say make every county is the US a state and thus create 3144 states, 6288 US Senators and 9432 Congressmen.
They would be paralyzed and could do nothing.
This could be offset by turning New England into one state. New England is a lost cause so let’s reduce the number of Democrat senators from 11.5 to 2 (Ayotte is a democrat in any conservative state).
We don’t need ten more Diane Feinsteins or Barbara Boxers.
please repeat after me :
ANYTHING a loony lefty proposes is never ever ever a good thing. there is always a hidden hook in the worm and being smarter than a fish i will never ever ever forget that.
thank you.
lol I couldn’t agree more.
i would prefer to trade new england to canada for their western provinces.
3 states might be okay .. but I’m not for 6 at all.
It might help if you identified the major cities in each section.
The sections that get SF and LA will have a possible advantage.
That’s why it should be North, South and Central. More than enough.
Would all be Democrat from this way of divvying it up?
Exactly. I'm all for this. I would have the opportunity to have 2 Republican senators and a fiscally responsible state government.
California has 1/10 of the population of the country and 1/50th of the Senators. Not everyone in California is a liberal. FWIW, California has more conservatives living in it than most of the red states (outside of Texas) combined.
Remember, children:
“As California goes, so goes the nation!”
I support the reapportionment plan.
Keep the Dem’s in certain areas, outnumbered by the Libertarians!
What happens if the farmers in the central valley cut off LA’s water?
