For Americans looking to mix in a little dental work with their vacations, there is no better place than Vicente Guerrero, a small Mexican border town better known by its nickname: Los Algodones (translation: Molar City).

Mexico is a top destination for so-called medical tourists from the United States who go South of the Border for significantly cheaper dental work, eyeglasses, plastic surgery, and prescription drugs. In Los Algodones, some 350 dentists work within a few blocks of the city center, NPR recently reported.

Is it wonderful that we have to go to a foreign country for cheaper service. Speaks well for America, doesn't it?

All hail King Obama the communists black Muslim terrorists.

Hay is always cheaper if you get it after it’s been through the horse.

Its disgusting that Americans are forced to go to a black market and leave the country just to get basic healthcare. Its even more disgusting that most Americans just accept it.

You wonder how Russians rationalized life under the Soviets? You are getting a glimpse of it now.

For years, I was happy to get my dental work when we were in Thailand. The dentist was an old school mate of my wife’s. Since my health is keeping me home, it’s been a terrific shock to see American dental prices (easily four times that found overseas).

"Los Algodónes" means "cotton," not "Molar City"--probably so named because cotton is grown in the area.

In days of yore, when I visited Yuma, I liked to visit Los Algodónes to shop. Because of the town's remote location, there were no parking hassles or long lines to get back into the US. But until our Marine comes home, I'm boycotting Mexico.

We have two sets of friends who go to Thailand for all of their planned medical and dental procedures. They have been doing it for years and swear by it.

My friend in Italy tells me they have much lower prices and much better dentistry there. They built the aqueducts, after all, can probably do xlnt root canals. And bridges.

An acquaintance lives very close to that particular Mexican border town, had all her dentistry done there, is super satisfied with the work and the prices.

B.S. the only way this is true is maybe its illegals in the US going back to Mexico for dental work. The dental work in Mexico is crap and nobody would go their to get it done if they were financially able to get it done in the US.

I noticed the same thing when I visited Juarez for about one hour a few years ago. All sorts of places advertising dental work. Maybe they should have places to fix your newly acquired bullet holes.

Brazil has good and inexpensive healthcare too. I need dentures desperately and just can’t afford the pulling of the teeth and dentures too. And dental insurance stinks for major dental work.

I had that problem in the US, different dental work. The dental profession has issues on both sides of the border.

Before getting dental work done in Mexico I’d recall the one and only Oriental rip off DVD I ever saw. A good friend of mine bought it in Hong Kong for $2.00 and it had fake U.S. logos and packaging. Then I watched it and found out why it cost only $2.00, less than half the price of renting the real Hollywood product. It was made by setting a camcorder up in the back of a theater and recording the movie off the screen. Along with the poor color quality and focus there were periodic images of people’s heads moving back and forth in front of the screen. All in all it was a great advertisement for paying the leal price for the real, copyrighted product.

that is a general statement... i know people who regularly get dental and medical care in Mexico, and it is not crap... and it is much cheaper... personally, i get my Retin-A from there, and it works really well...

My dentist is recommending I get upper dentures. It means I’ll have to get 9 teeth pulled. I just can’t do it. But two of them are going to have to be pulled before long. I think I’m going to try partials first. It sucks to get old.
