If the status quo holds, Mississippi Sen. Thad Cochran will lose his seat to Chris McDaniel, the upstart Tea Party Republican who pushed the longtime senator into a run-off election. And so, rather than persuade McDaniel's supporters, Team Cochran is trying to change the status quo by appealing to a new class of voters: African Americans. Here's the New York Times with more:
It is a remarkable political science experiment, and it also may be the only path to victory left to Mr. Cochran. But after being narrowly edged out by Mr. McDaniel, 41, in the Republican primary earlier this month, Mr. Cochran, 76, needs to expand the number of voters who will show up for the runoff, which is open to any Mississippi resident who did not vote in the Democratic primary. The winner on Tuesday will face former Representative Travis Childers, a conservative Democrat, in November.
Weve got efforts reaching out to black voters in Mississippi who want to vote for Thad because they like what Thad is for, said Austin Barbour, a Cochran campaign adviser. Thad Cochran is someone who, even with his conservative message, represents all of Mississippi. Hes not some hostile screamer.

LOL I voted for Hillary in the 08 primary as part of Rush’s “Op Chaos”
When the blade is two-edged, we can’t complain.
They will need to arrest these Democratic voters that attempt to vote in the runoff.
MS Ping
Motor voter, right?
Are you and J. Christian Adams asserting that a Democrat cannot vote for the Republican in the General Election?
It’s a sham as are all of these straw dogs that surround the rules of open primaries. It’s how corrupt politicians like Cochran have manipulated the system for years. Mississippi is adjacent to Louisiana, after all.
Hard for me to believe that people who have spent their entire lives voting against Cochran will go out on a hot day in June to vote FOR him..
Who will arrest them, the Thought Police? If anyone deserves to be arrested, it’s Republicans who vote for Cochran.
But are there enough conservative to overcome liberal Republicans + Democrats?
Worrys me.
It’s Voter Fraud.
Identify those who have historically voted in Democratic primaries and have never voted in a GOP primary and arrest them under the law previously cited.
No, it's not voter fraud just because you want it to be. It's called an open primary and no where on a Mississippi voter registration card is party affiliation indicated. You can vote in any primary that you choose, you just can't vote in the Democrat primary and then vote in the Republican runoff.
You can vote Democrat in one election and Republican the next, and then vote Libertarian. It's America, we can vote any way we want. That's why only fools and corrupt politicians favor open primaries. In open primaries, your political opponents can select your candidate and there is nothing that you can do about it.
I think that you are right about that, especially someone who was not motivated enough to vote in the Primary. You also have to wonder why Democrats would come out to help the guy that they claim they will have the hardest time beating in November. It's an act of desperation by the Cochran camp and I don't see the Democrats doing anything about it.
> Liberal elites know who to manipulate blacks... ya gotta give em that...
Sure thye do. By giving them freebies that you sweat and work for.
She should be careful what she wishes for, Blacks may start to like voting Republican (and get used to the idea) then what a hard leftist going to do??
It’s not fraud however much unfair the system is. Repubs. in MS (and everywhere) should work to change that and close all primaries to ONLY Republicans.

Actually, we CAN "complain." I don't know about Indiana, but here in Mississippi, it is ILLEGAL to vote in a primary against the party you turn around and vote for in the general. Just sayin'...
Thad Cochran is in full panic mode!!! Best defense for Chris McDaniel is an excellent offense....which means every registered Mississippi voter of any stripe must get out and vote for Chris McDaniel on next Tuesday, June 24, 2014 in the US Senate run-off election.
IMHO....I think that only a small number of African-Americans will turn out and vote for Thad Cochran. Obama, the CBC and the NAACP have not been their savior. Far from it!!! They are worse off economically, education and opportunity wise then they ever were!!! Obama is really not one of them...his heart & soul lie with the Muslim Brotherhood across the Middle East!!! I think that Obama and his Obamabots have set African-Americans back to the dark days of economic slavery on the “Obama Plantation”!!!
So.....All Voters in MS, turn out and vote for Chris McDaniel next Tuesday, JUne 24, 2014!!!! DO IT!!!
I just read a lying article that says "polls show Cockroach has the momentum."
This blatant play for democrat votes is disgusting and unacceptable. Republicans that do this need to be smacked down hard. This includes Cochran, the RINO running against Tom McClintock in Cali's stupid system, and will include RINO Congressman Richard Hanna of NY if he loses his GOP primary (he's on the ballot anyway as the Independence party nominee and there's no democrat in the race).
Cochran has become the defacto democrat co-nominee. What do you wanna bet he fails to endorse McDaniel after being handed his ass? You should have retired and kept your dignity, Thad.
Mississipi needs to change the law so this nonsense can't happen again, registered Republicans only!!!
People need to ignore the polls and just go out and vote for their candidate. Wasn’t Brat way behind in the polls before his landslide victory?
I really like McClintock and have been following him a long time.
Well McClintock faces a fellow Republican in November, Art Moor,e who’s campaign is being run by a former Ah-nold toadie. He’s attacking McClintock as a “Washington Insider”.
McClintock won a clear majority in the primary over Moore and an independent (no dem ran) but Moore could possibly win by getting all of the rat vote and peeling off just enough Republicans.
