Rand Paul: I Don't Blame Obama for Iraq Turmoil [NBC Goes To Town With This Byline!]
NBCNews ^ | June 20, 2014 | CARRIE DANN

Rand Paul: I Don't Blame Obama for Iraq Turmoil BY CARRIE DANN Sen. Rand Paul says he doesn’t blame President Barack Obama for the ongoing turmoil in Iraq and that former Vice President Dick Cheney and other proponents of the Iraq War should ask themselves the same questions Cheney is raising now about the conflict.

“What’s going on now -- I don’t blame on President Obama,” Paul said in an interview with NBC’s David Gregory to air on “Meet the Press” Sunday. “Has he really got the solution? Maybe there is no solution. But I do blame the Iraq War on the chaos that is in the Middle East."

In an op-ed this week authored with his daughter Liz, Cheney wrote of Obama that "rarely has a U.S. president been so wrong about so much at the expense of so many."

Paul, a possible 2016 presidential candidate known for his breaks with Republican defense hawks on foreign policy, said that Cheney’s criticism of the president’s strategy should also be questioned. Cheney is widely credited as a key architect of the 2003 war.

“I think the same questions could be asked of those who supported the Iraq War,” Paul said. “You know, were they right in their predictions? Were there weapons of mass destruction there? That’s what the war was sold on. Was democracy easily achievable? Was the war won in 2005, when many of these people said it was won? They didn’t really, I think, understand the civil war that would break out.”

Rand Pauls old man was a real idiot when it came to foreign policy and national defense issues. Apparently the nut doesn’t fall too far from the tree.

People who view the Muslims (whether Sunni or Shiite) as I view them find it hard to blame anyone else for the fact that they are killing one another. They've been doing this for centuries. It seems to be what they do. There is something wrong with that religion or the way in which many Muslims practice that religion.

It's pretty crazy but crazy is normal for them, it seems. Someday, maybe, they'll work out their differences. It's up to them.

It looks like I will have to revise the family budget. I’ll strike the planned contribution to the Rand campaign.

I am so sick of the Rand Paul, Marco Rubio, John MeCain, Linda Graham, John Cornyn's of the Republican party!!

They claim to be Conservatives but poke Conservatives in the eye every chance they get!!

I Obama had left an American Coalition on the ground in Iraq, the sunni muslims would not be so brazen!

Yeah, it was so stable and peaceful up until then.

Let’s hope they never work out their differences. It may be the main reason they did not take over the world in the past, and perhaps it is our best hope for our future.

Was the war won in 2005, when many of these people said it was won? They didn’t really, I think, understand the civil war that would break out.

Nonsensical. When you win a war, that war isn't "unwon" because the defeated nation falls into civil war later on.

I honestly had to check the post you were responding to to figure out if you were talking about the muslims or the Pauls!

You may question whether we should or should not have gone into Iraq in the first place, which I think we probably did not have a choice - I still believe there were WMD and the Saddam was playing footsie with terrorists. Once we did, and you permanently altered the balance of power in the region, it is a given that you have to stay for a good long while. Because if you leave prematurely, there is no doubt that really bad folks who hate us will fill the vaccuum. Choose your poison: ISIS, Al-Queda, Iran. None are good choices. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Why is staying for the long haul such a foreign thought? We are still in Korea, Japan, Italy and Germany. This emphatically is Obama’s fault because we should have never left.

Were there weapons of mass destruction there? That’s what the war was sold on.

Yes there were, and it's about damn time someone grew the balls to say so.

Was democracy easily achievable?

It is *never* easily achievable. Which is not relevant anyway. We should have cleaned out Hussein and the weapons, installed some sort of western friendly autocratic regime and left.

It is not our job, nor is it achievable, to nation build. Ditto in spades for Afghanistan. Three months after we took out the guts of the Taliban we should have, as I suggested above regarding Iraq, just left.

Our job was to remove the near term threat to our own national security (Iraq), and to eradicate those Taliban bastards to the maximum degree possible (Afghanistan) and get the hell out both countries as expeditiously as possible.

That is all. Period (as Dear leader would say).

Rand Paul, you have really disappointed me.

Sorry about that. I should have made it clear that I was talking about Muslims.

I was shocked when a friend first told me that Islam was as much a political movement as it was a religion. It turns out he was right.

I rest my case with that turdbrain Rand Paul. What in blazes will he come out with next; That Osama bin Laden was a poor misunderstood Eagle Scout?! Rand Paul may be O.K. as a surgeon, but as a legislator he’s in a class with John McCain; and I’d never risk him doing surgery on me!
