Iraq crisis: Isis jihadists 'seize Saddam Hussein's chemical weapons stockpile' - live
The Telegraph ^ | June 19, 2014 | Elahe Izadi

16.52 The remaining chemical weapons from Saddam Hussein's regime are stored in two sealed bunkers, both located at the Al Muthanna Chemicals Weapons Complex, a large site in the western desert some 80km north west of Baghdad.

This was the principal manufacturing plant for both chemical agents and munitions during Saddam Hussein’s rule.

Thousands of tonnes of chemical weapons were produced, stored and deployed by the Saddam Hussein regime. Iraq used these weapons during the Iran - Iraq War (1980 to 1988) and against the Kurds in Halabja in 1988.

Thank you for remembering that the yellow cake ended up in Canada. If I remember correctly, it took over a year to sneak it out of Iraq.

I read about that uranium. It was yellow cake uranium, which Iraq first tried to sell on the commercial market, with no luck, before sending it to Canada. The article said that the commercial price of yellow cake uranium at the time was $60 a pound. Again, it is not a WMD. As to whether it could be used to create a WMD, I don’t know. Seems like it could.

As to whether Cheney had to maintain silence on classified materials, he could certainly have revealed anything he and Bush wanted while they were President and VP. They revealed a lot of classified material leading up to the war. So at least until 2008, if they had found WMDs, they would have been free to spell out the details.
After that, you are probably right, they would be unable to reveal details. But I think Cheney could certainly have said, “But you are wrong. We did find WMDs” without going into the details.

And yes, I agree with you. I thought Mrs. Kelly was being very aggressive and insulting, and Cheney handled her with his usual aplomb. Very few people in the public arena are as good at dealing with the press as VP Cheney.

I’m sure the Mossad was behind it since they go after people who are a direct threat to Israel’s security.

I think The Telegraph is an above-average source of mostly reliable reporting. It is one of the most right-thinking dailies in Britain, along with The Daily Mail.

Yeppers. The Osirak reactor is no more and the world was thankful long after the fact when we went in the first time to Iraq.

I would love to hear the details about what they are doing to undermine Iran in their quest for nukes. We’ve seen some of the Mossad’s handiwork, but I can’t wait until the story is finished and we get the details afterwards. It’ll make a great book and movie.

So we can just erase about 50% of the news stories from the entire period of President Bush’s second term?

This is from the 2004 US inspectors report on Al Muthanna.

“Stockpiles of chemical munitions are still stored there. The most dangerous ones have been declared to the UN and are sealed in bunkers. Although declared, the bunkers contents have yet to be confirmed. These areas of the compound pose a hazard to civilians and potential blackmarketers.”

Our great and wonderful president triumphs again!!! Gives his muzzie murdering brothers chem weapons. Israel is now loading up the nuke bombs on the jets. The first chem weapon used on Israel will result in a nuke hitting somewhere in muzzie land.

Just wanted to let you know I read and enjoyed the article you “pingalinged” to me. Thanks very much. However, I think you must have been misled by the headline. The article itself says that WMDs were once made there. It does not say there are any WMDs there at present, or were there at the start of the Iraq war:

““17.09 Chemical weapons produced at the Al Muthanna facility, which Isis today seized, are believed to have included mustard gas, Sarin, Tabun, and VX.”
The article goes on to say, “17.05 The Chemical Weapons Convention, which Iraq joined in 2009, requires it to dispose of the material at Al Muthanna, even though it was declared unusable and “does not pose a significant security risk”

So the chemical munitions that are there are unusable and are not a security risk. WMDs are usable and do pose a significant security risk. So, no WMDs.

I have enjoyed our discussion of this topic. I hope you will keep me up to date with your findings in the future. I admire the passion you bring to your writing, even when it is misplaced.
