WASHINGTON (AP) Two senators unveiled a bipartisan plan Wednesday to raise federal gasoline and diesel taxes for the first time in more than two decades, pitching the proposal as a solution to Congress' struggle to pay for highway and transit programs.
The plan offered by Sens. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., and Bob Corker, R-Tenn., would raise the 18.4 cents-a-gallon federal gas tax and 24.4 cents-a-gallon diesel tax each by 12 cents over the next two years, and then index the taxes to keep pace with inflation. The increase would be applied in two increments of 6 cents each.

OK, on one condition - Congress pays for its own gas.
Well, they did force everybody to drive cars that get much better gas mileage. So now people use less gas. So they need to raise taxes.
And they also taxed per gallon, rather than per dollar, which seemed good when gas was cheap, but now with inflation the tax is half what it was before.
On the other hand, you could just not drive on the road. I mean, if they had not built it, you wouldn’t be driving on the ground the road is built on, right? So while it sucks that there’s this nice road and you don’t get to use it because it is too expensive, it’s not like the alternative was that you’d have a nice road for free that someone else paid for so you didn’t have to.
Funny how on the rare occasions that a democrat like Manchin joins with a republican to support a republican idea, the media never says it is a “bi-partisan” idea, they’ll say “Manchin breaks rank to support REPUBLICAN bill.”
More clowns who need to be primaried. Will the greedy thieves on Capitol Hill ever be satisfied? America needs a gas tax increase like we need a hole in the head.
Absolutely right! If the slime covered rodents would stop stealing from the trust fund there would be enough for every bridge and road
Never dawns on these morons to not loot the treasury. More taxes, that’ll solve the problem! I’m waiting for the eligibility age on SS to become 90.
Do these people realize what high fuel prices are doing to us? They not only raise the price of fuel, but of anything that needs fuel to be produced or transported.
I pay $3.5 to drive 6.5 miles one way each day. 54¢ per mile.

Don’t all bills dealing with money (taxes and spending) have to originate in the House? If so, this is illegal on the face of it!
You may not understand this, but I PAY FOR IT out of my gas tax.
In any case, it’s not an issue for me - by the time they raise rates high enough to hurt me, there won’t be anyone else left on the roads. My problem is the CRONY CAPITALISM that ALWAYS arises with these schemes. Although others may not care.
