WASHINGTON (AP) Two senators unveiled a bipartisan plan Wednesday to raise federal gasoline and diesel taxes for the first time in more than two decades, pitching the proposal as a solution to Congress' struggle to pay for highway and transit programs.
The plan offered by Sens. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., and Bob Corker, R-Tenn., would raise the 18.4 cents-a-gallon federal gas tax and 24.4 cents-a-gallon diesel tax each by 12 cents over the next two years, and then index the taxes to keep pace with inflation. The increase would be applied in two increments of 6 cents each.

Such misappropriation began under the uber-liberal president Ronald Reagan, who signed into law a provision devoting a portion of federal gas tax proceeds to mass transit. Now we have proceeds going to bike paths, streetscapes, and local road projects.
Damn them!
Corker.
When is this turd up for reelection?
I was thinking that with the current price of gas and so many people out of work that they were getting less revenue due to less gas consumption. Maybe not.
I can see a Northeastern ‘Rat being for this, or even an urbanite from either party who suffers from the delusion that what’s good for his city is good for the country, being for this, but what the h*ll is a Republican from Tennessee doing backing this misbegotten pile of rubbish?
Just what the lower class needs.... Higher transportation costs.
Here’s the alternative to a gas tax - paying 40 CENTS PER MILE to drive. This is a privately-owned toll road in Canada. The government there cut a CRONY CAPITALIST deal with the private company and they are allowed to charge AS MUCH AS THEY WANT.

For a car that gets 25 miles per gallon, this comes out to an equivalent gas tax of 10 DOLLARS PER GALLON.
Sorry, but I’d pay pay 12 cents extra, per gallon.
Cost of grocery delivery will increase.
My cost to drive to get them will also increase.
Double trouble.
Including gas and tolls, it costs me almost $70 just to drive back and forth to Miami for a simple sales call. I only live 75 miles away. Yeah - let’s jack that up even further. That will help the economy. Idiots.
Its quite obvious that they are all on one side.AGAINST the citizens. Fire ‘em all!
I thought only the House could propose revenue bills.

Raise taxes.....There’s the answer!
I’m always amazed at how many people in government have to hurt me in order to help me. They Democrats also want me to die so I can have a better life.
In Ky our potholes have potholes. Reminds me of the Ky Lottery scam sold to the ignorant as way to pay for education cost, course, for the children. I called a couple of years ago and asked why the school tax part of my property tax was going up and never got a response. Also asked where the lotto money went, never got an answer there either.
‘Electric bills are through the roof.
Meat and Food is through the roof
And these two hacks want to raise gas taxes?
They are so out of touch. Get rid of them both.’
Why do people insist that these people are out of touch. They have their finger on the financial pulse of the average American and know he is on life support. They are slowly unplugging us.
Boehner Republicans and Obama Democrats have no effective differences.
Why would any Republican vote for a Boehner Republican in 2014?
Congress hasn’t thought through that if the minimum wage goes up then that gas tax won’t be worth what it is today. Not that they ever think through anything these days.
When they all have cars with drivers driving them from their homes to the capital everyday, they never have to go to the gas station. Such arrogance is just astounding.
