WASHINGTON (AP) Two senators unveiled a bipartisan plan Wednesday to raise federal gasoline and diesel taxes for the first time in more than two decades, pitching the proposal as a solution to Congress' struggle to pay for highway and transit programs.
The plan offered by Sens. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., and Bob Corker, R-Tenn., would raise the 18.4 cents-a-gallon federal gas tax and 24.4 cents-a-gallon diesel tax each by 12 cents over the next two years, and then index the taxes to keep pace with inflation. The increase would be applied in two increments of 6 cents each.

More people driving than ever and still they cannot get enough money from the gas taxes. Says something about the problem right there.....the problem is and always will be government.

Congress raids the highway fund to fund non highway related projects. Throw the BUMS out.

Even self-respecting Bums don’t want to be associated with these vermin any more.

Make them pay for all of the perks they now get for free. The tax on gasoline wouldn’t be such a good idea then.
Arrogant idiots.

I could accept the indexing but not the huge increase.

They implemented the indexing here in Massachusetts. Because they don’t want to keep voting on tax increases...the public might notice. Make them vote for every increase. If they know people are watching, they likely won’t.

Perhaps an increased tax, applied in a revenue-neutral manner--which is to say, with an offsetting tax decrease of some sort--would not be such a bad idea. But a tax increase, absent a tax decrease of a similar amount elsewhere, is not a good thing--to put it mildly.

What is the matter with the voters of TN, repeatedly electing Corker? It can’t be his oratory, given his nasal twang.

And these two hacks want to raise gas taxes?
They are so out of touch. Get rid of them both.

The timing couldn’t be better—tack on a new gas tax just as gas prices explode thanks to the Iraq debacle.

Similar thing happened here in PA with the Turnpike tolls...only benefit is that EZPass has a much lower increase than cash.

CAFE standards are ruining the viability of the gas tax as a road funding mechanism. I think the government should repeal the last two rounds of increases, but I wouldn’t hold my breath on that one.
To: tennmountainman
They are really out of touch.
They ought to be paying attention because if the ballot box doesn’t get their attention, we may decend into the French revolution part two.
