In what some see as the first step to forcing the Washington Redskins football team to change their name, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Wednesday cancelled six federal trademarks of the team name because it's “disparaging” to Native Americans.
“Petitioners have shown by a preponderance of the evidence that a substantial composite of Native Americans found the term REDSKINS to be disparaging,” said the decision.
Fans, however, won’t see any immediate change — even if Daniel Snyder’s team eventually loses in court. That’s because all the order will do is eliminate the trademark the team has on merchandise.
The Redskins are expected to appeal.

No, they cannot. They can still be sued for infringement. Registration doesn’t create a trademark. The team still has its common law rights in its mark(s). Do not start selling Redskins shirts. Harry Reid doesn’t know the law.

Barack Obama’s name offends me, it evokes images of what?, socialists, bigamists, scumbags. He should change it. Oh yeah, he already did. Several times. Social security number too.
Completely ridiculous. Even most Native Americans don’t care about this, just the perpetually offended leftists with too much time on their hands.
There is a nearly all Navajo HS school in Arizona that uses the name “Redskins”, the kids like it.
