In what some see as the first step to forcing the Washington Redskins football team to change their name, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Wednesday cancelled six federal trademarks of the team name because it's “disparaging” to Native Americans.
“Petitioners have shown by a preponderance of the evidence that a substantial composite of Native Americans found the term REDSKINS to be disparaging,” said the decision.
Fans, however, won’t see any immediate change — even if Daniel Snyder’s team eventually loses in court. That’s because all the order will do is eliminate the trademark the team has on merchandise.
The Redskins are expected to appeal.

That decision abruptly ends the team’s freedom of expression.
What would happen if a new immigrant wanted to change his foreign sounding name (which often does happen with new immigrants) to Johnny Redskin?
Would he be denied that right, and what other names will appear on that exclusionary list?
Good thing our politicans have the free time to get involved in professional games.

My great-grandmother on my mother’s side was 100% Native American from Canada (she married a Québécois Canuck and they eventually settled in Watervliet, New York). That makes me 1/8 native-American, and as far as I know, qualified to have an opinion on the subject, so here it is: I don’t give a flying, smelly Obama what they call their team.
Liberals especially want to have a strong leader who will tell them what to do, right down to the size of soft drink they may choose. Liberals want government to have a monopoly on force so that they can effectively compel others to obey. Liberals today are the precise opposite of liberalism in the past - and as is usual for those who support totalitarianism, the left adopted a word that sounded nice and changed its meaning under Newspeak.

Exceedingly simple solution. Bring grievance to US Patent/Trademark office for EVERY professional sports team name. NFL,MLB,NHL, NBA...etc, will throw tons of support and money to prevent that cash cow from leaving the barn.
