I was very impressed with their detailed analysis of the Shokaku engagement. I couldn't believe the Japanese actually tried to do a roll call in the middle of evacuating a sinking ship. I wasn't in the Navy, but that made no sense to me.
The Army really did the right thing with it's thorough publications on the history of WWII. Some of the best historians in the country worked on that project.

The USN conducts muster every morning at sea, to determine if anyone fell overboard the night before.
As for the IJN, the idea MAY have been to determine who was present when the ship went down.
