Millennials consider leaving Washington as the city becomes more costly
Washington Post ^ | June 16, 2014 | Robert Samuels

The young couple had mastered the morning choreography of their tiny Columbia Heights kitchen. John Van Zandt squeezed into one corner and toasted an English muffin. In another, his wife, Florencia Fuensalida, brewed coffee.

For years, renting a one-bedroom near bars and bus routes was a suitable trade-off for the wonders of the new Washington. But Van Zandt is 35 now; Fuensalida is 31. And kitchen space seemed a little tighter each day Fuensalida’s baby bump grew.

Maneuvering past the fridge, Fuensalida repeated a tired refrain: “We’re going to need a bigger place.” But where?

They were once a part of the free-spending group of young people who jolted Washington’s economy. Now older and with more financial strains, they are trying to find a new place in it.

Amid the talk of young newcomers and their fondness for social leagues and artisanal-coffee shops, another reality exists: Many are struggling to keep pace with the city’s rising cost of housing. And as new millennials move into the District, older members of that generation — loosely defined as ranging from 18 to 34 years old — are heading out.

It's getting harder for Pajama Boy and The Life of Julia to stay out or their parents basement.

But they may help gentrify some of the hood if the blacks aren't too hostile and scary.

“I hate to say it, but the facts show that the D.C. market is for people who are single and relatively affluent,” said Grant Montgomery...

..."but heterosexuals are sometimes welcome too," he continued.

Yuppie angst. They love their gummint jobs and according to the story there are plenty of applicants for his. I'm sure there are.

My cousin (who’s older than me - 70s) lives in Georgetown.
It’s a fantasy world.
Prosperity unlike anything in flyover country.
Paid for with our taxes and 40% fake money.

Assuming you're talking about millennials/young[er]-adults in-general I think you may be a bit harsh on them — the economy is really bad (though surprisingly good when you consider all the crap DC is pushing), there's a lot of "entry level" jobs that demand two- to five-years of in-field experience.

I've been to Washington several times. I have relatives in the Virginia suburbs. No way would I live in DC itself, despite the trendy restaurants and froo-froo amenities. The place is a cesspool. The suburbs might be expensive too, but they are much nicer and safer.

Not talking about millennials in general, only ones who live in DC and suck off some government funded non-profits.

If you want to take another tribe’s territory you can’t do it by inviting them for cocoa.

They were once a part of the free-spending group of young people who jolted Washington’s economy.

So it has nothing to do with the Federal Government spending $2.8 trillion per year of taxed or printed money, all passing through Washington DC? Boy, those millenials are a powerful bunch!

<<< On a friend’s suggestion, Van Zandt biked to Northeast to check out the Trinidad neighborhood. “A lot of white people are moving in here,” a black resident told Van Zandt, presumably to comfort him. But the comment made Van Zandt uncomfortable. He didn’t want to be seen as the urban pioneer who would upset the neighborhood ecosystem. >>>

In other words, Van Zandt is afraid of black people.

It’s called “socialism”.

And you DC idiots keep voting for it.

You can’t be a middle class Marxist.

It just doesn’t work.

Washington should strictly be a federal capital. It should not be a city-state. And it should be moved in the middle of the country more, like in south-central IL or west-central TN.

Occasionally have to travel to DC for biz.

Absolutely amazed, especially during the recession.

No recession there. Big buildings, lotsa well fed folks boppin’ around, sky high prices.

It dawned on me...Oh. This is where the money goes. Lots of it.

And the Cubicle Nazis like to have nice buildings to go to.

Lucky them. Guess us Peasants just gotta keep on working.

Move somewhere else and vote for Welfare benefits and high taxes to destroy that area too. Libs are like locusts.

Yes, and Congress should be housed in a barracks and fed in a cafeteria.
No restaurants or bars allowed. Have a dormitory for those who have a reason to meet with Congress. No fancy hotels for lobbyists.
Give our elected officials as little reason as possible to stick around. Let them telecommute like everybody else.

Not to worry as Obama is bringing the "Dreamers" there to take over.

Don’t let these liberal assholes come to Arlington County and further pollute it with their insanities, inanities and drunken sailor-at-a-prostitute-convention spending.

In fact, take the bastards back, DC or send them to Marxist Maryland where they will feel right at home - high taxes, corruption, high crime rates, and a totalitarian ruling mentality.

Whatever you do, don’t send them over here. We’re stuck with fools like McAuliff, Warner, Kaine, Beyer and most of the Arlington County Council.
