I have some good news, and I have some bad news.
First, the good news: Employers have more job openings today than they’ve had at any time since the Great Recession began.
The bad news: Employers may be posting jobs, but they’re taking longer than ever before to fill them.
It now takes 24 working days for the average job opening to be filled. That’s the longest hiring delay since at least 2001, the first year for which numbers are available, according to a recent report from Dice Holdings based on research by Steven J. Davis, R. Jason Faberman and John C. Haltiwanger. To give you some context, when the recovery began five years ago, the average opening took about 16 days to fill.
This means employers are dragging their feet making hires, despite having 10 million jobless workers to choose from (not to mention many more already-employed applicants looking to job-hop). I’ve spoken to workers who have been called back for as many as nine or 10 interviews for a given position, only to be told at the end of the process that the firm had decided to hold off on making a decision “for now.”

No kidding. My son was told by a couple of HR managers they are taking applications and doing interviews but hiring will wait.
The WH has so gummed up the commerce and business of the United States by its incredibly inept regulations and policies, no one wants to wade into the mire.
He started his own business and THAT is another long, long process with the Soviet-style nomenklatura one must navigate in Amerika.
Can we turn this disaster around? Sure. The Civil War was the very worst thing that happened or could happen.
This too will pass.
Son started putting job applications in several months ago. Just got hired for a full-time seasonal job as a park ranger at a local state park. No benefits, of course. He’s going to have to start putting in applications for a full-time job NOW to start in September when the seasonal job is over. He wants to work a part-time job as soon as he can find one to work around his seasonal hours. He has a wife and newborn daughter to support. They moved close to us. We’re trying to help them as much as we can. I’d hate to be looking for a job now.
My hubby had 2 jobs for years....a full time one and part time one. That’s the way it was. I also worked part-time at home.
Some people ask why I do not have employees and accept my answer about over regulation.
Others see me as a greedy billionaire who refuses to spread the wealth. Eventually
I will have extra work but it will not be done by Employees, it will
be done by contractors. Any who seek work will be required to get a business license
so that they can become one of those most hated people in America too.

Yep. Daughter-in-law wants to work part time as well but baby is just two months old. My son said he knows we had it hard, but we always worked and always managed to pay the bills and put food on the table. He and wife both saw parents that worked hard to make ends meet. We never asked for help. I’m glad they both picked up that work ethic.

Could also be the sheer volume of applicants and interviews.
I used to work for a company that had some token outposts in Europe (Netherlands and France). It was almost impossible to fire an employee there, so they were always very careful about adding any staff.

I remember when I was a child my father worked two full-time jobs. His day job was as a policeman and he worked the Midnight shift at a plant that made fiberglass. Had different days off at each which he would spend working on our small farm. My mom also worked full-time from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. as a manager of a women’s clothing store. War was going on and times were really tough.
My older sister and I milked our two cows each day, fed the chickens, took care of the garden and she did much of the cooking and cleaning. Just what you did back then.

YOUR post explains both the situation and your attitude. You don’t refer to the prospective “employer” but scornfully use the word “bosses”. Employees are not people working and earning a living, but are “beleagured workers”, trapped in a terrible bind so they can feed a family.
I am in dire need to hire a “beleagured worker”, but there are so many like you, I’ll do the work myself.
You can create laws and regulations to harass “awful employers”, but you CANNOT require anyone to become an employer.
and the Affirmative Action hires in HR are getting EVEN LAZIER!
