Consistent gun checks a smart, simple step (barf alert)

Stopping gun violence is complicated.
Requiring routine background checks before all gun purchases is not.
A check to see if a person can legally purchase a gun is quick and simple. Licensed gun sellers in Wisconsin routinely and responsibly screen buyers to stop more than 1,000 criminals annually from buying weapons.
Yet a glaring loophole allows many gun sellers at gun shows and online to skip this sensible safeguard.
Thats wrong and cant be justified. Yet it continues sometimes with deadly consequences because too many politicians lack the courage to do the right thing.
The National Rifle Association fights consistent gun screenings. Yet the vast majority of the public as well as most NRA members favor universal background checks for all gun purchases.

The ATF Form 4473 question 27 and 28 already asks for model and serial number. The 4473s are kept at the dealer (supposedly anyway) and not entered into any central database.

Yet.True, but that is a hard moral choice to make. Tim McVeigh made it, and most people don't view him as a hero.

As a newspaper that is protected by the First Amendment, calling for restrictions in violation of the Second Amendment for a "smart, simple step" to reduce shocking gun violence causes me to suggest that the Wisconsin State Journal would be for smart, simple restrictions that can be placed on the press (TV, radio, newspaper, magazines, and so forth) and on burial facilities (including churches) to help reduce gun violence. They are:
- Names of the suspects will not be released until they are convicted, sentenced, and jailed. Why else would these people go on rampages except to get their 15 minutes of fame?
- Those perps that are killed before trial shall be required to be buried in unmarked graves, or placed in urns that are not on any form of public display
- Reporters, editors, anchors, columnists, and news show producers shall be fingerprinted, background checks performed, and be required to pay for a registration card, renewed every two years.
After all, isn't the pen mightier than the sword?

True enough. All I’m saying is that if they keep pushing, there will be push back. Not by me but...there are a lot of unbalanced people out there who can’t stand Liberals.

Reporters, editors, anchors, columnists, and news show producers shall be fingerprinted, background checks performed, and be required to pay for a registration card, renewed every two yearsI like it, BUT much too logical. Gun control isn't based on logic, but rather the worship of government power. To anti-gunners (like most of the MSM) we aren't just people with a different opinion, an opinion that is BTW enshrined in the Bill of Rights, but we're blasphemers for wanting to keep power out of the hands of government - blasphemers who should be punished.

The 4473s are kept at the dealer (supposedly anyway) and not entered into any central database. They are turned over to the BATF when the dealer closes shop. Also, there's been multiple reports of the BATF coming into "examine the books" and photocopying the store's forms.

That’s why I said “supposedly,” but the difference is that they weren’t designed to be a central database. The so-called “instant background check” is a much worse threat, since those are computerized, and there really isn’t any way to tell how long the government retains them and no way to force them to delete them if they don’t want to.
