A landmark law in Denmark making it easier for transgender people to change their legal gender should set an example to governments across the world, Amnesty International said.
The Danish parliament yesterday passed a bill allowing transgender people to obtain official documents reflecting their gender identity without needing to be diagnosed with a mental disorder or undergo surgeries resulting in irreversible sterilization.
“This progressive and courageous step made by Danish MPs should set an example to the rest of Europe and beyond,” said Amnesty International Denmark’s Helle Jacobsen.
“All states should ensure that transgender people can obtain legal recognition of their gender through a quick, accessible and transparent procedure in accordance with their own sense of their gender identity.”
Previously, Danish transgender people could only change their legal gender after receiving a psychiatric diagnosis of “transsexualism” or undergoing surgeries, irreversible sterilization and other medical treatments including hormone treatments.
Similar repressive laws affecting transgender people still exist across the world.

Please note: The "oppressive" previous laws (such as exist elsewhere) are insanely liberal by the standards of a few years ago.
Furthermore one can now painlessly change one's official gender back and forth as one pleases. I predict this will cause problems for the Danish authorities that they do not expect.
But, of course, it would be oppression to restrict me to any predetermined list (however long) of genders - I must be able to define a gender that reflects my sense of gender identity, and redefine it as often as that sense changes. O brave new world!

The only positive is it could stop people from surgically mutilating their bodies and turning themselves into sterile eunuchs.
And with the right surgery, they can.
All the problems in the world, and they’re worried about frickin’ freaks.
Society celebrates youth and puts down old age. There are surely many more old people who could benefit by having their age lowered than there are idiots who want to mutilate their bodies because they think they should have been born the other sex.
So long as they do it in their own country, knock yourseves out kids.
