LETTER: Children should not be sacrificed for gun rights

To the Editor:

Is this the kind of country we want to be — where our children are sacrificed so that a small minority of Americans can have any kind of gun they want? Your child or my child could be collateral damage just so a small minority of Americans can have the pleasure of owning a grenade launcher if they want. Pick which child you want to sacrifice. How about your oldest so that the younger ones might still have a chance at life? Or should it be the youngest since you have invested a lot of time and money already in the older ones? Or perhaps you’d give up your middle child since, ahem, you know what they say about middle children. That might be the one you’d prefer to sacrifice to the small group of Americans who say that it’s their right to own an assault rifle or an AR-15 because they equate the Second Amendment of the Constitution allowing them to have a musket with owning a weapon that can mow down 20, 30, 40 people or more at a time. Is that what you want America to be? I know the arguments in favor of owning high-powered guns. but no arguing is necessary. There is only one question that needs answering: Do you want to sacrifice your children so that anyone can own any kind of gun they want?

Just this week I called Sen. Toomey, Sen. Casey, and Rep. Meehan (my representative in Montgomery County) to ask them what their stance is on gun ownership. I could not get through to Casey. The lines were busy so I left a message — twice — never heard back. I also called Rep. Meehan twice and got two separate aides who said they had no idea what their boss’ stance on guns is. I called Sen. Toomey and talked to a staff person who told me Toomey tried to do something about guns once before, and it got voted down so his gun safety measures are on hold. But the aide told me that politicians take phone calls and what is said on social media seriously. Good to know.

Note to Rep. Meehan: Tell your aides what your stance on guns is so that when constituents call, the aides don’t sound clueless and misinformed because, Mr. Meehan, it’s a reflection of you.

Note to Sen. Casey: Call me back, please.

Note to Sen. Toomey: Get back to work on gun safety (oh, and thanks for having an informed staff member).

If you do not want your child sacrificed so that a small minority of Americans can have the pleasure of owning any type of gun they want, call your congressperson and ask them to tell you how they feel about guns and what they are doing to make our country safer. And then tell them how you feel about guns. Don’t be lulled into thinking nothing can be done because when the day comes that it’s your child who has been killed, sacrificed to the gun fringe, you’ll wish you had at least made a phone call.

You know, I really, really want an 8-inch howitzer. I don’t really care whether it is towed or self-propelled. It’s good to know, now, that I can have any type of gun that I want.

Yeah! This is great! A grenade launcher would be a dandy accessory for the 8-inch howitzer that I am going to get!

I sincerely hope “Claire” is eleven years old. It’s the only possible explanation for such horribly flawed reasoning short of rank stupidity brought on by a lifetime spent listening to Democrat propaganda.

Hey Clare;

Let's look at two recent shootings.

The one in Oregon where a student took an AR-15 semi-auto clone and killed himself and a fellow student and shot/injured a teacher.

How many bullets were fired? Would a ban on high capacity magazines made any difference? (Nope)

Was the rifle legally purchased? (yes) Did it go through a background check? (yes) Did it evil appearance in anyway contribute to the deaths or could another type of legally obtained rifle done the same damage? (yes)

The student had a handgun (it is illegal to possess a handgun unless you are over 18) taken from his parents in addition to the rifle. That is a felony.

The student hide the rifle and handgun in a guitar case. That is a violation of the concealed carry laws in the State of Oregon. Another set of felonies.

The student took the firearms onto school property. Another felony.

Murder is a felony as is attempted murder (the school teacher who was shot).

So since the student committed so many felonies, what additional laws could be pass that the student would have said “Oh my, I better not violate this one more law.” (None). Now then if there had been a ban on AR-15 clones would the kids family still have had other firearms? (Yes the kid stole a handgun as well as the rifle!) So would any legislation have stopped this? Probably not.

Now lets look at the shooting at SPU in Seattle. Some sources say it was a double barreled shotgun others just list it as a shotgun. What was the kind of shotgun that Joe Bidden told people to get? (A double barreled shotgun) Would banning of AR_style and Kalashnikov style firearms saved the lost life? (nope). Would banning a high capacity magazine made a difference? (nope) Was the university a gun free campus? (Yes) So what legislation would have prevented this tragedy? (better involuntary mental health commitment laws)

Semi-auto rifles have been around since 1885, that is one hundred thirty years ago. Now, suddenly they are a menace?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semi-automatic_firearm

“The first successful design for a semi-automatic rifle is attributed to German-born gunsmith Ferdinand Ritter von Mannlicher, who unveiled the design in 1885.”

Wait ... I can buy a grenade launcher??? Who knew?

Actually, in most states you can buy a grenade launcher. Grenades are a different story, however.

Exactly. As if ou brilliant founding fathers and inventors like Ben Franklin could not have foreseen guns beyond the musket! That’s insulting.

“And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?... The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If...if...We didn't love freedom enough. And even more – we had no awareness of the real situation.... We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward.”

Needs a barf alert, but Claire how about the poor kids who will not have a chance at life because they were aborted? How about the poor ones who get cancer? The Second Amendment makes us all safer, if you want to know who is part of the real sacrificer of our children, take a look in the mirror.
